Hyphessobrycon flammeus |
Origin: South America: In and around Rio De Janiero. Temperament: Peaceful good community fish. Size: Up to 4.5cm (1.8"). Temperature: 70-80°F or 21-27°C pH Level: 6.2 to 7.0 Food: Flake food, pellets, small insects and crustaceans, plant matter. Tank Setup: Keep plenty of plants in the tank, whilst ensuring there is adequate swimming space. Keep with other peaceful species. Breeding: Better to promote breeding in soft water of pH around 6.5. Females spawn amongst the plants, where between 200-300 eggs are laid. The eggs hatch in 48-72 hours, and the fry hang from the leaves for a further 72 hours before they become free swimming and can be fed on small nauplii. Sexing: Not too hard if you observe closely. The males have a blood-red anal fin, and the tips of the pectoral, ventral and anal fins of the male are jet black. The females are slightly duller and lack the black tip to the above mentioned fins. The female's anal fin is a much lighter red and may even fade to yellow. Comments: Generally good community fish, easy to feed and care for. Good starting fish that adds colour to the tank. |
