Origin: North-eastern South America. Temperament: An excellent community fish. Size: Up to 4cm (1.6"). Temperature: 75-79°F or 24-26°C pH Level: 6.4 to 7.0 Food: Flake food, pellets, mosquito larvae, small insects and crustaceans, plant matter. Tank Setup: Allow for some swimming space and also provide some dense vegetation, especially toward the lower levels of the tank, where this fish prefers to swim. Breeding: Spawning occurs amongst the plants, and the eggs usually fall to the ground. After spawning, remove parent immediately as they are carnivorous. The eggs hatch in 20-25 hours, and can be fed on small nauplii. Sexing: Very difficult.. Comments: Best kept in numbers of four or more. Has been kept in aquaria since 1940s. |
