Origin: Northern areas of South America: Through the Upper Amazon of Brazil to its tributaries, such as the Putumayo River in Peru. Temperament: Active, but a good community fish. Size: Up to 4cm (1.6"). Temperature: 75-80°F or 24-27°C pH Level: 6.2 to 6.8 Food: Flake food, pellets, small insects, plant matter. Tank Setup: Keep plenty of plants in the tank. Keep with peaceful, small species. Make sure there is swimming space. Breeding: Not difficult. Create a seperate breeding tank with some vegeatation and fish may spawn overnight. Fry hatch in 24 hours. Fry are free swimming four days later and parents should be removed immediately after hatching. Sexing: Almost indistinguishable.. Comments: Generally good community fish, easy to feed and care for. Long lived despite its size. Avoid keeping with considerably larger fish, including Angelfish, as these tend to make a good snack to a hungry or bored bigger fish. |
