Siamese Fighting Fish |
![]() |
Betta splendens |
Origin: South East Asia, especially Thailand. Temperament: Conditional. With different species, fine, however two males will fight to the death! Never keep two males in the same tank! Size: Up to 5cm (2") Temperature: 77-83°F or 25-28°C pH Level: 6.5 to 7.0 Food: Flake food, pellets, peas, algae, lettuce, (most greens), worms, crustaceans, insects. Tank Setup: Though often sold in small containers, especially at "universal" chain pet stores, this practice is strongly condemned by 1550/fish. (How would you like it?) Better kept in a minimum of a 24" tank, where they are allowed flourish and usually live longer. Breeding: Bubble-nest breeder. Medium difficulty, however the real barrier in breeding this fish lies in seperating the males after a certain age, for obvious reasons. This requires a specialised, and often expensive set-up. Sexing: Obvious. Males more brightly coloured with greater fins.. Comments: Can be kept in a community tank with peaceful breeds - avoid fin nippers, especially tiger barbs. As two males will fight to the death, they are sometimes used in competetions in Asia, however this practice is illegal in most civilised nations |
