STRAIGHT TALK WITH SAM

This holiday season, many Missouri families will celebrate with a
loved one overseas. In many cases, that loved one is a member of the
National Guard or Reserves.

Iraq continues to be a dangerous place, but our mission there must be
completed successfully. We simply cannot afford to leave before our job is
finished. Iraq remains the central front in the war on terrorism and our
Guard and Reservists are playing a major role in achieving success in
Iraq.

However, while these part time soldiers move to full time soldiers,
they not only risk their lives, they risk putting themselves in a personal
financial hole. This is unacceptable. The brave men and women of the Guard
and Reserves should not have to risk their financial security for our
national security.

I have introduced legislation that would provide tax incentives to
businesses that continue to pay a soldier up to 50 percent of his or her
compensation. For many in the Guard and Reserves, a full time military
paycheck is far less than what he or she makes outside the military. This
bill would allow these soldiers a chance to continue to provide for their
families and pay their bills without going into even deeper debt.

I need your help to get support for this legislation that will help
our heroes in the military. Please call your Senators to express your
support for this legislation, H.R. 454. The courage of our men and women
of the armed forces is on full display a half a world away. With your
help, we can make sure that their families are taken care of here at home.
Members of the Guard and Reserves may be part time soldiers, but they are
full time patriots and I am grateful for their service.

Sincerely,

Sam Graves
Member of Congress
