Troops coming home

September 22, 2005

Local Guard soldiers were assisting with Katrina relief

Missouri National Guardsmen stationed at the Maryville Armory were scheduled to return home today, after three weeks of duty while deployed to the hurricane-ravaged region of Louisiana.

While deployed, these units were assigned a security mission that supported the total hurricane relief effort.

Sheri L. Howard, the unit public affairs coordinator for the Maryville National Guard Armory, said the soldiers performed a number of tasks in their security mission, including guarding streets in New Orleans against looters.

The soldiers were scheduled to return to the Armory sometime today, Howard said.

Returning soldiers will inventory equipment, perform maintenance operations on their equipment, complete medical evaluations and other administrative functions.

"I'm very proud of the work these soldiers have done while deployed in support of Katrina operations," Brig. Gen. King Sidwell said. "It's an honor to serve with them."

Howard said around 50 soldiers would be returning today after the three-week deployment. Ten soldiers from Maryville returned last week.

"They were students, and their orders ended at two weeks, so they were able to return back to college," Howard said.

Northwest Missouri State University is offering classwork assistance for work missed or tuition reimbursement for those who are not able to finish classes while deployed to the Gulf Coast through the Armed Forces. Also, the university has extended the offer to students who volunteer to work for the American Red Cross.
