Fellow Soldier's of Field Artillery News

SPC Gary Baker

On June 30th SPC Gary Baker was informed by his father that his wife of three years, Rebecca Baker, was tragically killed in a car accident. Needless to say these are days that no one should have to experience. SPC Baker is on his way home as I write and will be arriving in Missouri on July 1st. The unit will be setting up a college fund for SPC Baker's two year old daughter, Daylynn. (Please see details below)

I do not have the words to describe what this dedicated soldier and loving young husband and father had to go through that day. I can however describe to all of you what type of a young man he is. As I talked to SPC Baker I noticed at least thirty pictures taped to his wall beside his bed. Many were of his family, most were of his beautiful baby girl. These pictures appeared to be at the closest possible place to him while he slept. More than likely SPC Baker placed these picture there so that he could see everything that mattered to him at the end of a tough day and so that he could wake up to his family and be able to start the day off right.

SPC Baker is an outstanding soldier that has served his country with the utmost professionalism and dedication. He will be greatly missed by his platoon and the Baumholder community.

On behalf of A 1/129, the Family Support Group, the 129 FA BN, and the 709th MP BN I would like to offer our condolences to the Baker family.

Please keep the Baker family in your prayers as they endure this devastating tragedy.

Thank you,

CPT Tim Strohman

SPC Baker's Platoon Leader, 1LT Holaday, is setting up a college fund for Daylynn Baker. 1LT Holaday sent an E-mail out to many of us with his intentions. I copied the entire message for all of you to read.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Some of you may have heard the tragic news already, but Mrs. Rebecca Lynn Baker, Wife of Specialist Gary Christopher Baker (formerly of Btry B 1-129th FA), currently deployed with A 1st Bn 129th MP Co (Prov) in Baumholder, Germany was killed in a car accident on 30 June 2004. Mrs. Baker is survived by her husband, who is returning home on 1 July 2004, and their daughter, Daylynn Christian Baker (nearly age 2).

Request thoughts and prayers for the family in coping with the loss of such a young life and a promising family.

Request that donations and gifts be made out to the Daylynn Christian Baker College Fund. Donations in Germany need to be sent to the following address:

Shannon D. Holaday
A 1-129th MP Co (Prov)
CMR 405 Box 2922
APO AE 09034-2922
485-7895 (or 011-49-1701-127459)

Request that donations state side be sent to the following:

Btry B 1-129th FA, MOARNG
Attn: SFC Brent Young
1500 Washington St.
Chillicothe, MO 64601
660 646-2421

Both listed parties will see that the donations are handled and placed into the college fund for Daylynn Baker.

On a personal note, SPC Baker was and always will be my soldier. I have never worked with a more professional, detail oriented soldier. His care factor, work ethic, and personality set the standard for all to follow, BUT NONE OF THESE ATTRIBUTES COME CLOSE TO REACHING THE LEVEL OF LOVE THAT HE FEELS FOR HIS WIFE AND DAUGHTER. HE IS AN EXCELLENT FATHER AND HUSBAND. THEY WERE AND ALWAYS WILL BE A GREAT FAMILY, and that is the most important thing in life.

Thank you very much,

1LT Shannon Holaday
2nd Platoon Leader
