News From UtahNational Guard soldiers welcomed home ![]() Spc. Marcel Alvarado gave daughter Marshunna a kiss after members of the 1st Battalion 129th Field Artillery returned from a year of active duty. Returning solders were told to enjoy their time with family but to remain ready because they could again be called back to active duty. For 46 soldiers, their families and friends, 2004's holiday season will be a much happier than last year's. A number of family members, friends and members of the public were on hand for a welcome home party on Monday at the headquarters of the Missouri National Guard's First Battalion 129th Field Artillery in Maryville. Read the rest of the story printed by the Maryville Daily Forum View the Photo of the Week featuring the Alvarado Family The following information was received from a girlfriend of a soldier that is in Utah. Their spirits are very low. They work three days at the Chemical facility in 12 hour shifts. I believe what they do is patrol the area for anyone crossing over into "army territory." They say it's extremely boring to sit for 12 hours and look out into nothingness. When the three days are over they have one day of rest back at the base which they try so hard to catch up on sleep. Most of them miss meals often and have many sleepless nights since their sleep schedule is spiratic. After their day of rest they have two or three days of training. I think it's much like boot camp...I know they were doing swat tactics one day. After the training days they have three days off and then back to work again. They are an hour away from any sort of civilization which is Toele (basically a hole in the wall). Only a few of them have cars so they take turns driving into town for entertainment. Sometimes they go to Salt Lake City but I think lately their boredom is too much to muster enough energy to even go there. Mostly, they sit in each others rooms and watch tv/play video games, play softball and go swimming. The base is in a desert valley between two mountains and although the scenery is beautiful one gets tired of looking at it. Basically, it's in the middle of no where...everywhere you look there is nothing. I mean I didn't believe it until I was there but it's the desert...they seriously have tumble weeds like you see on cartoons just blowing in the wind and antelope roaming freely everywhere. |
