The Hero

Not a knight in shining armor, or sweet prince who wakes you with a kiss,
A person in fatigues, combat gear and a picture in their pocket of the loved ones they miss.
My hero goes first, risking himself to make it safe for others,
They're our husbands, wives, children, sisters and brothers.
Fairy tales are wonderful, a life of illusion,
Real life is filled with tough decisions, turmoil and disillusion.
The knight in shining armor was a great fairy tale as a child,
But true life brings stories, not meek, happy or mild--
Stories of villains, bombings and situations gone wild.
Make-believe super heroes are fun for children to want to be like,
But my soldier will return home dirty, tired and changed for life.
So I wait for his kiss, because he is my prince,
My HERO in Real Life.
