Now
- The Night Brad Thought I'd Been Snatched In My Sleep
One
night Brad Pitt woke up to alarm bells ringing and no Jennifer. He
didn't know about his wife's erratic sleeping habits....
Jennifer
Aniston and Brad Pitt have just celebrated their second wedding
anniversary. But although they're often regarded as Hollywod's most
glamerous couple, they've recently been spotted out and about
looking rather dodgy and unkempt.
Brad's
sporting a straggly beard, the sort usually favoured by down and
outs, which he grew for his upcoming film The Fountain. And
Jennfer's latest part also requires her to look more plain and badly
dressed than usual. In The Good Girl, she plays Justine, a frumpy
cashier at the local Retail Rodeo (it's set in Texas) whose
pot-smoking housepainter husband Phil (John C Reilly) bores her
rigid. But then she becomes involved in a hot and heavy affair with
a sexy but disturbed teenager (Jake Gyllenhaal) and all hell breaks
loose.
In
the film, your husband smokes pot to escape reality. What about all
those rumours concerning you and Brad smoking pot? Are they true?
Those are some of the funnier headlines. It's unfortunate and I have
nothing to defend.
Have
you ever done drugs or been tempted to use them?
No - and I've never been around drug use. I don't live in that world
and believe in that idea - whatever it is - of Hollywood glam. I
don't even know if it exists, at least in my circle of friends. It's
not part of my life.
It
is true you were never a wild teenager?
Yeah, i never stayed out all night or sneaked out and slept at
someone's house. I was a pretty normal kid who didn't really rebel.
So it was a bit hard to relate to all the craziness in my last film
Rock Star. I feel that if I missed out on anything - on any real
wild times in my life - I got a taste of them then. [laughs.]
One
scene sure to be talked about in The Good Girl is where you have to
help your husband give a sperm sample in a cup and he asks to hold
your breast while he does it.
[Laughs.] Oh God, that was John's first day at work and we had to do
it in a tiny bathroom with three cameramen. It was pretty hard not
to crack up.
For
your hot love scene with Jake Gyllenhaal, did you look at each other
on the set and think: 'We're going to be rolling around in bed
together, virtually naked'?
You mean just anticipating the day? [Laughs.] Jake said that's the
only reason he did the movie.
Has
Brad seen the love scenes you have with Jake?
Yes. He's seen the movie and loves it. It was the first time I'd
been nude on screen. I was a movie virgin and it was rather awkward.
But we had a chastity pillow between us and kept our underwear on.
I was lucky that Jake was as nervous as I was for those scenes. But
it was fast and painless - two takes. You just close your eyes and
pretend, then you go back, blush and feel like an idiot. [Laughs].
Did
Brad give you any tips?
He just said: "Be nice to the guy. He's just a kid,
remember."
There
was a rumour that you walked around carrying weights to get into the
role.
It's absolutely true. It's because I have bad acting habits. I talk
with my hands. [Her hands are moving back and forth as she says
this] See? I wanted to take little characteristics away so I could
be a step removed from myself. The weights were just to be conscious
of it. And the clothes were very dowdy.
Were
you shooting Friends at the same time?
Yeah, on Thursdays and Fridays. It was an utterly exhausting
schedule. I think that's why I cried a lot on set.
Where
were you and Brad when you heard about the Emmy nominations? (Friends
got 11, including Jennifer for Best Comedy Actress and Brad for Best
Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.)
Sleeping. It was very exciting. It took Brad a day to figure it out.
He was a little shocked by the whole thing. I don't think he ever
expected that it would happen. But it was great as we both had so
much fun doing it.
Do
you want to work together again at some point?
Sometime in the future - but we have no plans at the moment.
What
are your plans once Friends ends after the next series - will you
take time off?
There's loads I want to do. I plan to do some travelling - there's
so much of the world I'd like to see. I also want to undertake more
film projects and start a family in the next year or two. I've
always fancied two or three children, but brad wants seven!
How
did you feel having a baby in Friends?
I cried, because they had smeared jelly on the baby's face to make
him look newborn. That, plus the reality of Ross, Rachel and a baby
really moved me. I'm an emotional person anyway. My husband calls me
a leaker.
Do
you enjoy making movies more than TV work?
In some ways. Friends is a pretty amazing job, but it's rare. So I
probably wouldn't dive back into that world again.
Do
you ever think there'll be Friends: The Movie?
God, I hope not! If I'm doing that in 20 years, just put me to bed.
You
earn millions on Friends. Do you ever feel guilty about earning so
much money?
No. [Laughs.] Not at all.
The
Good Girl is such a departure for you. Do you worry that fans will
be expecting Jennifer Aniston?
You think they'll be mad? Maybe surprised. Hopefully, if I did the
job right, they'll go with the story.
Tell
us something strange about you that's true.
I scoop out the insides of bagels, but I don't think that's strange.
OK, I sleepwalk. I set off our burglar alarm once and I found myself
outside. That was pretty weird.
Did
it wake you up?
The alarm scared the hell out of me! I woke up and I was out by the
pool equipment in the back. I don't know what I was doing there. I
heard Brad yelling at me, because he was terrified - he hears the
alarm and then finds I'm not there. It was just awful.
I did it twice through the same door, but the alarm didn't go off
the first time. My mother says I used to sleepwalk as a kid.
You
married Brad two years ago. Has it gone quickly?
It feels like a minute ago. We had a good feelin about each other
the moment we met. There was some sort of magic chemistry.
So
what did you do on the day?
I'm not telling, but we had a great day together. Our marriage is
based on love and friendship. We're honest and bring out the best in
one another. Brad's the kindest person I know, he's the sweetest
goofball on the planet. Oh, and I love kissing him.
