Engineering and Technology
Integrated applied sciences and engineering technology programmes
The courses in these programmes are relatively new and are offered by the IITs, BITS (Pilani), and other prominent institutions, offering an interesting option to students who have just passed out of school.
Students with broad subject interests will find these courses interesting.
Applied geology and exploration geophysics
These are modernised basic science courses incorporating the fundamentals of all branches of earth sciences. Applied geologists are increasingly involved in problems related to the harnessing of natural energy resources and environmental control.
They work with engineers and social scientists in a variety of projects which include soil conservation, ground water utilisation, multi-purpose river valley projects, dam and reservoir site selection, tunnelling, highway construction, terrain analysis and evaluation for civil and military purposes, rural development programmes, etc.
Employment
Central agencies like the Geological Survey of India, Oil and Natural Gas Commission, Central Ground Water Board, State Ground Water Boards, Coal India Ltd., National Mineral Development Corporation, Hindustan Copper Ltd., Hindustan Zinc Ltd., Department of Atomic Energy and many others recruit earth scientists regularly. Mines in the private sector are also required by law to employ professional geoscientists.
Chemistry
The five-year integrated programmes leading to an M.Sc. degree in chemistry prepare the students for modem day research in chemical sciences by providing an in-depth education in chemistry, adequate training in mathematics, physics, computer and engineering sciences.
In the first three semesters of their stay in the programme, students in this programme take the same courses as their fellow engineering students. They are, thus, prepared to do frontline research in interdisciplinary areas, which include materials science, environmental science and molecular biology, in addition to the traditional topics in chemistry.
Mathematics
The five-year integrated M.Sc. programmes in mathematics train students in the major areas of mathematics and allied disciplines, such as pure and applied mathematics, probability and statistics, operations research, numerical analysis and computer science, besides allied sciences and social sciences.
Mathematics and computer applications
The five-year integrated programme leading to a M.Sc. in mathematics and computer applications, aims at training students who can handle problems in industry, public undertakings, defence, CSIR and other national laboratories through the combined use of mathematical and computer techniques. It is a broad-based programme in which students get training in necessary engineering and technological aspects as well as in humanities, thereby giving them the capacity to develop their own computer software.
Physics
The five-year integrated M.Sc. course in physics is designed to produce students capable of pursuing advanced studies in theoretical and experimental physics, in addition to handling problems related to the application of physics in engineering, technology, industry, medicine, etc. The students can opt for specialised courses in advanced physics and work on projects in experimental physics.
Statistics
The five-year integrated programme leading to an M.Sc. degree in statistics imparts a sound knowledge of theoretical and applied statistics. Statistics is the science of making wise decisions in the face of uncertainty. It has manifold uses in almost every aspect of human activity, be it market and product research, quality control of manufactured products, economics, etc.
