Graduate Options
The following options are available to students who want to graduate in engineering. Students can compete on an all-India basis in the IITs, Benaras Hindu University, Roorkee, and many other engineering colleges including the various Regional Engineering Colleges.
State colleges of engineering in the country have then own rules and students with state domicile are eligible for appearing. Out-of-state candidates are eligible for payment seats. Direct post-graduate degrees ME/M.Tech can be done by opting for the 5-year integrated courses after 10+2.
After B.Tech, post-graduate courses with scholarship/assistantship, are open to students who have qualified in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) or the National Eligibility Test (NET of UGC). Graduate engineers, associate members of the Institute of Engineers, post-graduates in physics or chemistry or mathematics or statistics or computer applications can appear for the GATE, conducted jointly by the IITs and the Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore.
Post-graduates can pursue research in research centres such as the BARC, ISRO, etc. Many graduate or post-graduate engineers opt for government service.
The Engineering Services Examination is conducted every year by the Union Public Service Commission to select candidates to serve with government departments and public sector units in mechanical, civil, electrical, electronics and telecom branches.
For diploma holders in different branches of engineering, the Institute of Engineers, the Institute of Telecommunication Engineers and the Institute of Aeronautical Engineers conduct membership examinations which have been recognised as equivalent to the engineering degree courses.

Colleges conducting the All India Entrance Examination for BE/B.Tech courses of four years duration offer it to students after 10+2 with physics, chemistry and mathematics as subjects.
