Lazaro Gonzalez was the prodigy of the Hardcore division. He became the first Hardcore Champion at WrestleFest 2000 by defeating in succession, Jo-Jo, Hardcore Beary, Sexy Bear, and finally Eddie McPhereson in a gauntlet match. He then proved to be a fighting champion, defending the title against Hardcore Beary, Mr. Skeets, and The Ice, all while defending under the 24/7 rule. He seemed to be on top of his game, but all of a sudden Lazaro disappeared. Perhaps he had gone to Cuba in search of Elian, perhaps he was finally confronting Janet Reno, we will never know for sure, but he was stripped of the title due to inactivity, and it was put up for grabs at No Escape.
