I think this will be the last entry under Magnum's Rehab section. We are well into our rehab and still getting off and on lameness. According to our surgeon, the TPLO is completely healed, the plate is not an issue anymore. What we are dealing with now is the arthritis and trying to rebuild the muscle in the leg.
We took Magnum swimming again today. He was very excited and probably did a little too much running around and jumping around in the water. It is so hard to keep all 4 of that dog's feet on the ground!! We do the best we can but he just gets so excited at the prospect of swimming and chasing his beloved bumper in the water it's almost impossible to keep him down. He was in the water for about 20 minutes today. I washed his chin with the Nolvasan again. I do think that it helps some.
So far he seems to be pretty comfortable. Or, at lest, as comfortable as he ever is. He still has a bit of trouble getting up and he sits rather gingerly, all indicating he does have pain in his knee, but he is walking on it. We'll take tomorrow off, as the surgeon suggested and just take it easy.
I will start a new page for Magnum to chronicle our battle with arthritis. So, to end the TPLO section, I would say that his TPLO was, indeed, successful and it was a life saver (and a leg saver) for him. Before the surgery he was not using the leg at all. Now he walks on all 4 most of the time, except when he overdoes it. The muscle is beginning to come back but we have a very long road ahead of us. Had he had the surgery right away things may have turned out very differently. |
