Mrs. Willson's Very Excellent Reading Adventures |

Reading is more fun and practiced more when talking into you own private telephone. The children are quieter because the sound of their voice is carried through the phone to their own ear. They whisper read or it is too loud. These phones were made with two 1" pcv "elbows" and a 3" piece of one inch pcv pipe. You can make them many ways using different configurations of pcv pipe. It is inexpensive and works very well. The employee in the plumbing section of Lowes cut the short pieces of pipe for me and the pieces fit together without adhesive so there were no chemicals used. They are easy to clean. I ask the kitchen staff to run them through the school dishwasher on a regular basis. They are very happy to help. Next year I will let the children decorate their own with perminant markers. Special thanks to Mrs. Hurley who told me about the idea from a 4 block training she went to in Louisville. |

Many children come to Kindergarten ready to learn to read. Every child who will try get's the chance. We encourage but do not pressure children. Life long readers associate reading with "warm fuzzy" feelings. We do our best to make sure our children find joy in the process. The different levels of books makes it easier for everyone to have success. Groups are always changing based on interest and at times ability. We have the Scholastic Reading Counts program in our building and some of the Kindergarten students are using it as the basis of their individual reading program. Reading Counts is a computer program that checks for comprehension. Each book has a bank of 30 questions. The computer selects 10 questions for a quiz. No two tests are the same. Every child in class could have a different quiz on the same book. The program keeps excellent and useful records. It also keeps track of points earned by reading and passing quizzes.
