Kranichfeld

The city Kranichfeld with 3800 inhabitants is a center of industry, trade and tourism. It is 8 km from Erfurt and 12 km from Weimar. Kranichfeld remained for a long time a small town of traditional hand crafts. In 1888 the railway line to Weimar was built. Today there is an annual rose festival.

Kranichfeld is one of the youngest cities of Thuringia. First mentioned as a settlement in 1143, the municipal laws was received in 1651. The name two-castle city results from the landmarks and objects of interest of the past, the Niederburg and the Oberschloß. The 900 year old church is also of interest.

The two castles are on opposite sides of the river Ilm. According to a legend from the twelth century two brothers Wolfer and Lutger lived at the Oberschloß. Lutger sought his fortune and on returning built the castle opposite. The Oberschloß has the appearance of a building of the early Renaissance. Bult mainly arond 1530 older sections older date from the twelth century. The Niederburg received its current appearance after a change in 1906, it was however already mentioned in 1233.
