Stransky Park, a small, but nice little park not too far from my house.
About two blocks from Stransky Park, this park was once a small lake and was used for skating in the winters. Now it's been drained and people use the Ice Box for skating.

A small part of Wilderness Park on the southwest edge of the city. It's a large park that follows Salt Creek and was once a nice place to get away from the city for awhile. Nowadays it's mostly known for the perverts who like to visit there. | The Lincoln unit of the Nebraska State Penitentiary. This used to be the state's maximum secutity prison and executions were carried out here. Now they have been moved to the new prison at Tecumseh, Nebraska, a small town southeast of here. This is one place I hope I never spend any time.

Star City Shores. This is Lincoln's little water park. It's difficult to get a good photograph without going in because of trees, buildings, and a major highway.
A couple of the bicycles from the Tour de Lincoln bichcle sculptures project last year. There were 71 of these around town. Most of them are gone now, but there are still a couple of dozen around. I will try to add a few of them as I see them.
A few of the old shops that were once common in the older neighborhoods of the city. These were built in the late 1800's and early 1900's when most people didn't have personal transportaion or refridgeration and they had to buy fresh meat and other perishables every day or two. Many of them have found second lives as the homes of small bussinesses while others are not used at this time. Some people consider them to be eyesores that should be removed. I seee them as important reminders of our collective past that should be preserved.
The Platte Valley from a rest area along Interstate 80 north of the river.
Part of the bluffs south of the river.
The river in the distance from a bluff on the south side. | A closer view of the Platte from the bluffs on the south side.
The Platte River has played a very important role in the histroy of Nebraska and of the West. It starts in the mountains of Colorado and Wyoming and winds it's way across the state until it empties into the Missouri River south of Omaha. Many of the old pioneer trails, including the Oregon and Mormon trails, followed it and the ruts cut in the ground by thousands of wagons can still be seen in places today. Nowadays Interstate Highway 80 follows the same path and cuts across the old trails in many places. The river is also important to migrating birds following the Central Flyway with millions of them, including Sandhills and Whooping Cranes, stopping to feed and rest along the Platte in the central part of the state every spring and fall. |
