It was the day of Abby and Luka’s wedding. Carter had decided to work. Abby had
invited him, but he knew he couldn’t go. Not even if he wanted to. It would just
break his broken heart into more pieces. He still couldn’t accept the fact that
Abby thought she’d actually be happy with Luka. Carter didn’t believe on word of
what Abby had told him before. She was going to get herself into an uphappy
marriage because she didn’t want to be with him, under any circumstances, for
the most ridiculous reasons.
"Leave it to Abby to do these things." Carter thought. "I think that’s why I
love her."
He went into the lounge and sat down, thinking.
Abby looked down the aisle. She knew there wasn’t that many people there, but it
seemed like millions.
"Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out." She told herself in her
mind. As long as she kept breathing she wouldn’t pass out, throw up, or make
like Julia Roberts and be a runaway bride. She could do this.
The wedding was set in a beautiful church. It was like a fairy tale. It was so
serene. Half the reason Abby chose this place was because she thought that if
she got jumpy, she could stare at the walls and they would calm her nerves. Luka
just thought she was enchanted with the imagery.
The music started to play, that was her cue. Abby began to walk down the aisle,
smiling back at all of the faces smiling at her. She saw Luka at the end,
smiling, happy, and didn’t look a bit afraid. Right, she could play off that. He
didn’t seem to be having second thoughts, why should she?
Abby finally reached out place beside Luka. He reached out and grabbed her hand.
Abby smiled and squeezed it back.
"....we are gathered here today to join this man and this woman into holy
matrimony..." The minister began. Abby tuned out. All of this seemed surreal.
Was this really happening? Did she really love Luka, and want to be with him
forever? Abby shook her head. Yes, she did. This was going to happen and it was
going to be the happiest moment of her life. Abby recomposed herself in her mind
and focused on what the minister was saying.
Then, the crash of the doors behind her. Everyone’s heads turned. Abby whirled
around.
Carter. Standing there.
"Abby." Carter pleaded , standing in the middle of the aisle, looking straight
into Abby’s eyes.
Abby tried to find words. "Carter, wh-"
"Don’t do this." Carter said shaking his head, never breaking eye contact with
her. "You don’t want this."
"How would you know?" Abby asked in a soft tone.
"I know you, Abby. I love you. And you love me too." Carter inched slowly toward
her.
Abby turned back to Luka. He was in a trance, looking back and forth.
"I’m sorry Luka..." Abby said before taking Carter’s hand and running out of the
church.
