Twins offer 4 years, $40 million to Santana From the Seats, February 10, 2005 MINNEAPOLIS - The Twins are making valid efforts to sign Johan Santana, as their latest offer is a sign of that. They have offered Santana the middle ground of what he was asking for and the Twins were looking for, which seems fair, a good place to keep things moving. From the St. Paul Pioneer Press: The fact the Twins meet in the middle of where the two parties stood shows they are serious about signing Santana. Even with the large increase from where the Twins started they are probably still under market value for him. But you wont hear this Twins fan complaining, as long as they are able to sign Santana. |
Santana’s negotiations hit a snag late last week but have resumed. Neither side would discuss terms, but the Twins’ latest offer is believed to be a four-year deal worth almost $40 million with a fifth-year option. It likely would take a contract comparable to the one Toronto’s Roy Halladay signed after he won the AL Cy Young Award in 2003 — a four year, $42 million deal. Santana is scheduled for an arbitration hearing Tuesday. He is seeking $6.8 million. The Twins are offering $5 million. |
