Are Nutritional Supplements Necessary? Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy
food. - Hippocrates, father of medicine |
Consider
These Facts:
- Seven out of every ten deaths in the United States are directly related
to diet and lifestyle.
(1995 Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
In 1994, the United States Congress declared that:
- There is a link between eating certain nutrients or dietary supplements
and the prevention of chronic diseases such as cancer, osteoporosis, and heart
disease.
- Preventive health measures including appropriate use of safe
nutritional supplements will limit the incidence of chronic diseases and reduce
long-term health expenditures.
(Findings of the United States Congress as listed in the Dietary
Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994)
The simple fact is that our diets have changed
radically within the last 50 years, with great and often harmful effects on our
health. These dietary changes represent as great a threat to public health as
smoking. Too much fat, too much sugar and salt, can be and are linked directly
to heart disease, cancer, obesity, and stroke, among other killer diseases. In
all, six of the ten leading causes of death in the United States are linked
directly to our diet.
- Senator George McGovern, Dietary Goals for the United States, 1977
There's provocative and compelling evidence that the
most protective level of nutrients may be achieved through supplementation.
- Jeffrey Blumberg, Ph.D., Associate Director of the U.S. Department of
Agriculture [USDA] Human Nutrition Research Center of Aging at Tufts University
No illness which can be treated by diet should be
treated by any other means.
- Moses Maimonides, 1134-1204 A.D., philosopher, jurist, and physician
In a controlled study performed at the Shriners' Burn
Trauma Center at the University of Cincinnati Medical School, patients with
severe burns over 60 percent of their bodies were divided into two groups. The
first received the traditional, well-balanced diet generally prescribed by
physicians; the other received the same diet plus nutritional supplements.
Tragically, 44 percent of the group that relied on a well-balanced diet alone
died, while 100 percent of the group that took supplements survived.
Scientists participating in the study concluded,
"to our knowledge, this is the first controlled study to demonstrate what
has been suspected and accepted for some time, that nutritional intervention
improves survival."

effects of aggressive protein feeding in severely burned children," Annals
of Surgery, 192, 505, 1980)
In
a nationwide survey of 20,000 people, not one person met the basic Recommended
Daily Allowance (RDA) for all ten of the vitamins and minerals analyzed, and
many got less than 70 percent of the RDA for several nutrients. This is
particularly significant because health experts state that individuals who
consume less than 70 percent of the RDA for any single nutrient are at a
definite health risk.
