VALERIE EGNOZZI
    My Refuge by Valerie Egnozzi

i remember only the forest
only in dreams
dense and tranquil
ancient and untouched

trees grew tall
their branches
kissed the sky
consumed
in shafts of light
by the setting sun

in reality
the forest is gone
all that is left
a field of weeds

the earth weeps for the forest
tears
dew upon scarred ground
the sun aches for the trees
to warm with its rays

I miss the forest too
I once sat beneath those trees
heard the whispers
in its foliage
telling me
softly
you are home

To light the House by Valerie Egnozzi

Father and daughter
in uniforms
of scarves, boots and gloves
step outside
onto a powdered sugar battlefield
their misson
to put strands of lights
in every bush
colors fighting
shining with pinks and blues
reds and greens
darkness falls
hands and feet frozen
bodies shivering and weak
victory!
but alas not all light up
casualties of war
