How to load Arabic with Windows XP

  1. Go to the Start Menu and then to Control Panel
  2. Choose Date, Time, Language and Regional Options
  3. Click on Add Other Languages
  4. Make sure Install Files for complex script and right to left languages (including thai) is ticked
  5. Click on the details button under the Text services and input languages section
This dialogue box should be showing:

  1. Click on the Add button it the middle of the box
The following dialogue box should now be showing:

  1. Choose Arabic under the input language and press OK

You should now be able to use the Arabic font on your computer. You will see a small EN in the bottom right corner of the screen near the time. If you click on this you can change the language to Arabic AR (and of course change back to English in the same way)

If you want to type a document in Word in Arabic you should use the right to left alignment option. To create a button on your toolbar for this, do the following:

  1. Go to the View Menu, Choose Toolbars and then Customise
  2. Click on the commands tab (middle one)
  3. In the left side of the box choose Format and scroll down on the right side until you find the left to right and right to left options as shown below:

  4. Click and drag the left to right and right to left buttons from the customise box to the toolbars and let go where you would like them to stay – the toolbar should look something like this:

Use the right to left button for Arabic and left to right for English

If you aren’t familiar with the Arabic keys you can turn on the on screen keyboard to help you type until you get used to where the keys are:

  1. Go to the Start Menu, All Programs, Accessories, Accessibility and finally On-Screen Keyboard
  2. A keyboard like the one below will appear above your work, to change the keyboard to Arabic, first make sure the language is set to Arabic then hover your mouse over the keyboard. It should change to display with Arabic letters. You can type Arabic by either left clicking directly on the on-screen keyboard or using the corresponding keys on your real keyboard.
  3. If you would like to position the keyboard on another part of the screen, click and drag the title bar (the blue bar at the top where it says On-Screen Keyboard).

P TIP: If you are sending something to somebody else (eg. A letter) in Arabic it is best to save it as a picture first because they may not be able to read it. To do this press the Print Screen button on your keyboard and then paste (Ctrl + V) into a program such as Paint, then select, copy and paste the area you want and save as a picture. Then anyone will be able to read it regardless of whether they have Arabic installed or not.
