Aim:
This curriculum web aims to promote high school learners’ understanding of how a cell is organized to perform its life functions by allowing them to work in groups and sending them on reliable fact-finding as well as interactive web sites in order to not only solve a puzzle, how is a cell similar to a factory, but also assist Johnny, who is trapped in a cell, in finding his way out. In addition, learners create a cell using components of a factory (cell factory).

Rationale:
The understanding of how a cell is organized to perform its life functions is essential in understanding the biological processes in health and in disease. For example, if one understands how a cell is organized to perform its life functions then one can proceed to study the mechanisms of cell division. Then if one understands how to control cell division this may be of significance in reference to cancer, a disease in which cells of an organ or tissue in the body become abnormal.

Learner Description:
The activities in this web are designed specifically for high school biology learners who are in the 9th or 10th Grade.

Prerequisites:
Cells contain certain structures that perform specific jobs. These structures are responsible for the actual work of the cell.

Subject Matter Description:
Topics will include: Information about the Components/Organization of Cells and Systems
1) Basic animal cell organelles (Cell Membrane, Nucleus, Mitochondria, Ribosomes, Vacuoles)
2) Factory (as a systems that is coordinated and work together)
Concepts and Skills: Utilize various online resources to conduct an in-depth study/data analysis/data synthesis/data evaluation/division of labor/presentation skills/creation of cell factory.

Leaning Objectives:
Upon completion of this curriculum web learners should be able to:
1) Utilize various online resources to conduct an in-depth study in which they analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information.
2) Identify the different components of a cell, and how they are related to components in a factory.
3) Infer how a cell is organized to perform its life functions via the self-realization that just as factories are coordinated and work together, cell parts must also be coordinated and work together.
4) Assist Johnny, who is lost in a cell, in finding his way out of the cell.
5) Use the components of a factory in order to create a cell (cell factory).
