I knew I had missed my road to the west which I was supposed to take, that would have taken me across the 2500meter summitt. It was getting late in the evening,so I decided to push on and see if I could make it to the lakeshore. If I could see it,I could get there! As I made my way down the east side of the mountain,I started to notice lots of fresh bear poop on the service road.Keepin an eye out for the culprits of said poops,I slowed it down alittle, and no sooner than the next switchback,I ran into my first black.A fully grown 850 lb black bear, eating the new grass on the side of the trail, looks up at a forest green KLR650,front and rear tires locked up,and hightails it down the road!Damn bear moved so fast it was scary!50 meters down,he crashed into the bush and was gone.
Ok ,I thought, one scairdy cat bear,no problem!I went down the road another 2 miles and I was gettin real close to the lake when out ran another bear, aprox. 200 yards in front of me.I stopped, the brown bear stopped ,and it looked at me real hard.Getting ready to spin a quick 180 and get the hell outa there,I noticed movement in the bush to the right of her.Out pops these two little cubs, and start runnin for momma. The big brown sow took one more hard look at me and ran for the bush.*
Overlooking Arrow Lake B.C.Canada    (Below there be bears!!!)
That was it for me,I had had enough!!I took of for the main road and headed south to see if I could find a alternate rout.10 km down,I came to the end of the road, right at the lakeshore. There was a camp set up (treeplanters),and I asked the cook if there was an alternate rout to my destination. She said no,and gave me some water(very nice girl)and away I went, all the way back to my starting point,Needles B.C,
I set up camp at about 8:30pm and when I checked my trip odometer,I was surprised to find 145 km.
Great ride,I slept good that night knowing I had just witnessed some of the most elegant scenery in the most rugged background.Good thing the KLR has such a big gas tank.I cooked some dried gourmet food with my Ultra 2 camp stove, lit a fire, brought out the Jack Daniels, smoked a cigarette, and contemplated the day.Under awesome stars, the milky way stretching across the blackness, fire blazing orange hot, peaceful silence pervading everything, its hard not to really enjoy the world we live in.
