Operation
Somalia Strike
Scenario
Somalia
has been known as hostile territory for many years now, and the tension between neighboring
countries is at a all time high. Somalia is located in east Africa,
and faces the Indian ocean and is separated from the middle east only by the
gulf of Aden. Today, our allies the iron eagles were attacked by the Kenya
Airforce, who's fleet consist of mikoyan Mig's which are believed to be brought
from the soviet black market.
A
squadron of Mikoyan Mig-29 Fulcrums attacked a small group of unarmed merchant
ships at 8:30am local time. All 3 merchant ships were sank, the squadron of
Mig's were to fast to catch up to, and now we are left waiting until they come
back for the carrier.
At
the same time a key village of Belet Uen, where Virtual Australian Air Force
troops are stationed came under attack, we managed to hold them off, but we have
many casualties, which will require transport, we also require new supplies and
reinforcements.
Actions
In
accordance with a situation like this, immediate action must be taken.
Protection of the carrier needs to be put into place, and reinforcements and
supplies must be transported to Belet Uen, as well as the evacuation of casualties. And finally an
Ariel bombardment of the key enemy airfield of Kismayu.
Our
home bases.
Our
major airbase is in the capital Mogadishu, most of the aircraft will launch from
here, read on to read about what aircraft will be launched were and what their
flight plan is. The other main base is the CVN-70 USS Vinson carrier, located
150km out of Mogadishu, most of the Iron Eagles aircraft will be based here.
Flight Plans
(for both VAAF & IE ) IMPORTANT READ THIS
Below
are the flight plans for each group of aircraft, note you may be flying the same
flight plan as other aircraft. Next to each flight plan, is a color, this matches
a colored flight plan route shown on the main map , (somalia.jpg).
Simply
type in these co-ordinates into your GPS to fly to them, if you are not GPS equipped, use dead reckoning (flying by visual navigation, i.e. using landmarks)
to approximate where the towns are located, (use top down map view in
conjunction with somalia.jpg to approximate towns if GPS cannot be used)
NOTE
TO SQUADRON LEADERS : You are responsible for deciding the operating
ceiling during your missions, a good approach is to set your flight plan ceiling
to about 5000ft, (unless bombing or landing of course)
IF
YOUR NOT FLYING IN A SQUADRON : If your not assigned to a squadron by there are
other aircraft flying the same flight plan as you, you should communicate with
them, and fly in a group with the other aircraft/s , this will make the flight
plans run smoother, and will reduce the load on the ATC.
Caribou, Hercules & C5 Galaxy Pilots (GREEN)
After
you are loaded and refueled, takeoff (note Mogadishu will be ATC controlled),
and fly a direct GPS to Belet Uen, (You should study Belet Uen more by reading
the airfield section below)
Once
you have landed at Belet Uen, make a quick park, pick up the casualties, and take
off again, and head for Mogadishu airfield.
Land
at Mogadishu, drop of the casualties in your allocated parking area (as shown in
mogadishu.jpg), refuel, and start over, continue this process of transportation
until the scenario ends.
U2 Pilots (YELLOW)
You
are to park in your allocated space at Mogadishu (see mogadishu.jpg), request
takeoff when ready, and head direct to Baidoa, once you are within 5nm of Baidoa
, turn left and head direct to Bardera , once you have intercepted this, head
south to Jamama (if you can not find jamama, fly towards Kismaya, where the bomb
runs are conducted), then head north along the coast back to Mogadishu.
Land,
(don't forget Mogadishu will be ATC controlled) , park in your allocated space,
refuel (using the FS menu) and takeoff once more, and repeat the flight plan.
Don't
forget to take snapshots of the key waypoints as you intercept them, if you fly
over Kismayu, take plenty of snapshots, save these screen shots for the
post-briefing report.
VAAF F/A-18 , IE F-16's Pilots (RED)
Your
task will be to scout the key area around the USS Vinson, keep on the watch for
enemy fighters, your flight plan is as follows.
Park
your squadron's in the allocated parking area (see mogadishu.jpg) If you are
assigned to a squadron, all clearence comands will be made by the squadron
leader, stick in your squadron, don't leave them out of your site, you will taxi
together, takeoff together, ect.
First
you will take of from Mogadishu, follow your squadron leader, after takeoff you
will fly along the coast until you reach Marek. then fly direct to the USS
Vinson aircraft carrier, were some Iron Eagles squadrons are based. Using GPS,
fly over the USS Vinson above 500ft ASL, after you have flown over the Vinson
fly direct back to Mogadishu, using GPS, land , park, and refuel.
Once
you have done these repeat the flight plan , until the scenario is over.
PC-3 Orion & S-3B Pilots (White)
Your
training up till now is going to be tested here, you will scout the coast of
Mogadishu and the continental shelf south of the USS Vinson aircraft carrier.
Study the map of Somalia (somalia.jpg) your flight plan is shown in white.
The
flight plan is follows.
Park
at Mogadishu at your allocated parking , shown in the map (mogadishu.jpg)
When
your ready, taxi, and takeoff (remember Mogadishu is ATC controlled so all maneuvers
must be requested).
Upon
takeoff fly direct GPS south along the coast to Kismayu, upon arriving at Kismayu,
turn left, and set GPS for USS Vinson, fly so that you will not intercept the
Vinson carrier, but will fly east of it , about 5-10nm to the east of the
carrier is sufficient, after you have flown past the carrier, turn left and fly
until the carrier is south of you, when you have done this, fly direct GPS to
Mogadishu.
Land
at Mogadishu, park, refuel, ect. When ready repeat flight plan, until scenario
is over.
If
you are having trouble with the flight plan, study the Somalia.Jpg map. Your
flight plan route is in white.
F-111 and B-52 Pilots (BLUE)
You
will be involved in an intensive constant bomb-run of the rebel airfield of
Kismayu,
Your
flight plan is as follows.
Park
at Mogadishu at your allocated parking, shown on the map (mogadishu.jpg)
Once
your squadron is ready, request permission to taxi (ATC will be active in
Mogadishu), after taxi and takeoff, fly direct GPS to Kismayu, (squadron leader
should assign a cruising speed that can be matched by the B-52 aircraft)
When
you arrive at Kismayu , spread out, a few nm from each other , then one by one,
line up along the runway, as if you were to land, descend and remain above 100ft
above the runway and release the bombs above the runway. (simulation drop of
course)
After
you have done this fly west of Kismayu for 2 to 5 minutes and then fly direct
GPS back to Mogadishu, (you do not have to fly in a group on the return leg of
the trip ), upon landing refuel, and regroup at your allocated parking. Wait
until all members of the squadron have arrived back at parking before departing
again to bomb again.
Continue
the Bomb runs until the scenario is over.
IE Navy F-14 , F-18, T-38, A6 Pilots (PURPLE)
You
will be stationed on the USS Vinson carrier located off somalia. Your flight
plan is shown in purple on the map (somalia.jpg). Study the flight plan.
Upon
approval for takeoff, depart the carrier and slow down immediately, fly in a
fairly tight but comfortable circle until all members of your squadron is
airborne, (it is crucial that the squadron leader communicates), once all
members of your squad is airborne (try if possible to takeoff all together at
one shot to avoid waiting for members), fly direct towards Mogadishu,
once you are half way between USS Vinson and Mogadishu, fly south west (225'
bearing), until you Mogadishu is directly north of you (study mogadishu.jpg
flight plan) A simple way to do this is leave the GPS set to Mogadishu for now,
when Mogadishu is directly north of you, the GPS will say bearing = 0.00 degrees
(or near 0 degrees anyway). An estimation using the GPS should be easy enough
and sufficient.
After
you have flown south of Mogadishu, fly South-South-East (about 168' bearing) and
set your GPS for USS Vinson carrier, do not fly towards the carrier yet,
continue flying at 168' degrees, until the carrier is now north of you, so it is
bearing 0.00 degrees (use GPS), once the carrier is bearing north of you, fly
directly towards the carrrier, and land... park, refuel, regroup and repeat the
flight plan until the scenario is over.
If
you are a squadron member the squadron leader will help with the navigation, if
you are lost just follow your squadron leader...
Note
to squadron leaders flying this flight plan
You
should know how to use your GPS and be able to do basic navigation, if you do
not understand how to fly this flight plan, speak to a higher ranked , or higher
experienced member to help you, do not leave it until the last minute if you do
not understand how to use the GPS effectively, there will be a small tutorial on
the OPERATION SOMALIA STRIKE website, it will show you how to use your GPS
effectively.
