Easter Harmon Pass Adventure
After seeing a large H in the sky above Canterbury Friday, Jake, Beks, Mag, and I got up early Saturday morning, did some shopping, and headed for Arthur's Pass.
We walked up the Waimakariri Valley (mostly in the dark), scrambled over Harmon Pass, and then left via the Taipo Valley.
There is a cableway on each side of Harmon Pass. With river levels low enough we used one just for the adventure but it takes much more time that just walking across.
Over the main divide via Harmon Pass.
We took a side trip from the pass up Mt. Craig for views all around and what may have been the Tasman Sea.
The highlight of the trip were the hot pools one could dig out of the riverbank near Julia Hut.
The hut weka, a flightless native.
It was only four days but apparently we were crusty enough that no one would stop for us. Even when the guys hid in the bushes. Luckily there was a bus to take us back to the east side of the divide.
