Fairy Tale 248-268

Jax watched apprehensively as Brenda read Sonny's fax. When she was done, she looked up at him. Shock was written across her face. She looked like a deer caught in the headlights - her dark eyes were round and unblinking, her small mouth slightly open with surprise. Jax searched her eyes with his, trying to read her thoughts, but all he could see was surprise, confusion and uncertainty. Neither one of them spoke for a few moments, and then finally Jax broke the silence.

"Well.....I guess congratulations are in order. You did it Bren - he's all yours." He tried to sound happy for her, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't keep the sadness out of his voice.

Brenda smiled weakly. "Yeah...I guess he is." her voice like Jax's was surprisingly depressed. She looked down at the paper in her hand, trying to comprehend it's meaning. Sonny had confessed that he loved her. Not only that, he was willing to leave Lily for her so that they could spend the rest of their lives together. After months of hoping and dreaming for this very thing, even Brenda, who knew she loved Jax with all her heart, was shocked at how unattractive an idea this was.

"I bet you can't wait to start your life with Sonny." Jax said softly. "Just think - the two of you will be together forever." Jax leaned down slightly so that he could get a better look at the expression on her face.

Brenda practically screamed "Nooooo!" at the very idea, but she remembered that she was supposed to be in love with Sonny and that since she hadn't told Jax she loved him yet, screaming or throwing up right now wouldn't be the greatest move. "I guess." she answered looking completely unenthused. Glancing up she saw him watching her closely, and it made her smile. "Hey...." she grinned. "Let's not talk anymore about Sonny and I and..." she wrinkled her nose involuntarily, "and everything with that...because - *we* -" she took both of Jax's hands in her own and looked up at him. "have a wedding to get ready for!"

Jax looked at her curiously. "Are you sure you still want to go to the wedding? Because if you want to go home and see Sonny..."

"No!" Brenda practically screamed. When she saw how strangely Jax was looking at her, she smiled and said more calmly. "No...I can't go back to Port Charles *now*...I'm in the wedding silly. We'll just go to the wedding and have a good time, and then when we come home, I'll go see Sonny..."

She trailed off at the end of her sentence and Jax leaned forward trying to hear what she said after Sonny. "What did you say Bren?" he asked.

She just ignored him, and kissed him on the lips. Jax returned the kiss, but could have sworn that the last word she'd said was "maybe."

"Brenda Veronica Barrett?! Have you completely lost your mind?" Lois cried when Brenda finished telling her and Juliet about the fax from Sonny and how she'd made excuses for not leaving. It was the day after Brenda had received the fax, and the first time she'd been alone with Lois and Juliet. The three women had just gotten back from lunch with the guys, who had gone to play tennis. "Why don't you just tell the man already that you love him?"

"Lois! Stop yelling at me." Brenda wailed, throwing herself down on Lois' bed and covering her face with her hands. "I'm completely confused as it is. And completely miserable. I just can't believe this is happening. Why did Sonny have to do this?"

Lois and Juliet both looked at eachother and then sat next to Brenda on the bed. "Oh sweetie - I'm sorry I yelled. I'm just worried about you." Lois apologized, rubbing Brenda's shoulders gently.

"Bren -" Juliet said quietly, playing with Brenda's dark hair. "I have to say that I agree with Lois. You need to tell Jax how you feel. And you need to do it soon!"

"I know, I know, I know...." Brenda sat up and shook her head. "I don't know why I didn't do it yesterday. I wanted to honestly. But for some reason I got really scared and I copped out."

Juliet sighed. "Brenda, listen to me...Jax loves you. Everyone can see it, just like everyone can see that you love him. The only people who have a question in their mind are you and Jax, and it's time for those questions to be answered. Please - tell him before the wedding."

"I'll try." Brenda said softly. "I'll try - but I'm not making any promises."

Lois was about to argue with her when there was a knock on the door. "I'm not done with you - " she teased, as she got off the bed and answered the door. A few minutes later she returned carrying two small boxes. "Presents!" she cried, handing one box to Juliet and the other to Brenda. "I don't know who they're from, but the bellboy said they were delivered this morning."

Brenda and Juliet smiled happily and started opening the boxes. "Wow...it's beautiful..." Brenda exclaimed as she peered into the box at the elegant necklance. It was a large opal surrounded by a ring of platinum. There was a delicate platinum chain with a diamond clasp. It was magnificent. "Look - there's a card. I thought this wouldd go with your bridemaids' gown. Please wear it. Signed, an admirer." Brenda furrowed her brow and looked over Juliet's shoulder to see what her card said and what she had gotten. The card was the same and she had also received the same necklace.

"Secret admirer?" Juliet repeated. "This is strange. I wonder if Jax and Kieron sent them."

Brenda shook her head. "I don't think so. Jax already helped me pick out a diamond pendent for the wedding, so he wouldn't have bought me another necklace. Besides - this isn't really his taste."

"Yeah - it's not Kieron's either. Who would send us such expensive gifts?" Juliet asked suspiciously.

Brenda held the necklace up around her neck. The opal settled right below her collarbone. "Well whoever it's from - it's gorgeous. Maybe he saw us from afar and fell madly in love with us." she teased trying to make Juliet smile.

Juliet wasn't convinced or smiling. "How did he know what our dresses looked like or that they were the exact shade of pale blue as these opals?" She was getting a nervous feeling in her stomach.

"I don't know Jules." Brenda rolled her eyes. "Maybe he saw us at the dressmaker or he could have seen pictures of the dresses in Cosmopolitan - remember that article about Jerry and Caroline's wedding?" she looked at her friend curiously. "Why are you acting so suspicious? It is a nice gift, end of story."

"You're right. I should just appreciate the new jewelry." Juliet tried to smile and cover-up how worried she really was. She couldn't shake the feeling that something horrible was about to happen, and that these necklaces were not what they appeared to be...

*****************************************************************************************************

"Juliet! Would you stop playing with the radio and just pick a station?" Kieron complained as he looked over at Juliet in the car seat next to him. It was the following day, and Juliet, Kieron, Brenda and Jax were all crammed into Jax's jeep driving to the airport so that they could fly to California for the wedding which was taking place at Jax's house in Malibu. They had left Ned and Lois at the spa earlier that morning, and had already been in the car for two hours.

The past two days had been a lot of fun. Even after the men arrived, the women had stuck by their "spa" schedule while the guys played tennis, went swimming and hung out together. The six friends had spent their evenings dining, dancing and talking. They were closer than ever, and Ned, Kieron and Jax's deal with ELQ was proceeding exactly as they'd planned. The only apparent problem at the moment was Brenda and Jax's refusal to tell each other how they felt, and Brenda was planning on ammending that as soon as she could. Little did she know that Jax was also contemplating revealing *his* feelings. Being with Brenda these past few days had taken a toll on him, and although he could hardly believe it, he felt himself falling deeper in love with her every moment he spent with her. He had never imagined he could love one person as much as he loved her.

Juliet glared at Kieron and flipped the radio dial one more time. She turned to the oldies' station and the 1950's Exciters' song "Tell Him" came on. "I love this song!" she cried. Giggling, she turned around and winked at Brenda. "Hey Bren - don't you *love* this song also?" she smiled suggestively and looked back and forth between Jax and Brenda who were in the back seat. Brenda responded by blushing and glaring at Juliet, who just ignored her as she turned up the volume and sang along.

I know something about love -

You've gotta want it bad

If that guys got into your blood

Go out and get him

If you want him to be

the very part of you

makes you want to breathe

Here's the thing to do

Tell him that you're never going to leave him

Tell him that you're always going to love him

Tell him, tell him, tell him right now.

Jax saw the look Brenda gave Juliet and looked at her strangely. Brenda noticed and flashed him a smile. "Oh my god -" she groaned inwardly. "How much longer is Juliet going to give me?" She thought about the past two days and all the hints and embarrassing situations Juliet and Lois had put her through. There was the entire truth or dare game where J&L kept trying to get J&B to choose "truth" so that they could ask who they both loved. Unfortunately for them, both Jax and Brenda continued to choose "dare" which caused embarrassing situations for J&B who were forced to do such dares as Jax doing yoga in front of everyone, and Brenda having to make an edible meal. Then there was the fiasco at dinner the previous evening when Lois had blatantly asked Brenda if she was happy about leaving with Sonny. Luckily for Brenda, before she was able to answer, Ned had gotten on stage and begun to sing which caused everyone at the table to quiet down and watch the show. Now Juliet was singing this ridiculous song and smiling and looking blatantly at Jax then Brenda and back and forth. Brenda was feeling more nervous and apprehensive by the second.

I know something about love -

You've gotta show it and

Make him feel the moon up above

Go out and get it

If you want it

Makes you heart sing out

If you want him to

Only think of you.

"I wonder what she's thinking about?" Jax wondered as he watched Brenda sitting next to him in the car. She had a funny smile/frown on her beautiful face - the look she wore whenever she was rreally confused about something and was trying to sort it out. Ever since she'd gotten the fax from Sonny she had been acting very peculiar. She seemed to be in her own world. "She's probably dreaming about being with him." Jax thought bitterly. He couldn't believe that two days from now, Brenda would be leaving him to go on the run with the mad mobster. What had Sonny ever done to win the love of this beautiful dark haired angel? Jax listened to the lyrics of the song that his sister was belting out and realized that he *had* to tell her. If he didn't - he knew that he'd regret it for the rest of his life.

Tell him that you're never going to leave him

Tell him that you're always going to love him

Tell him, tell him, tell him right now.

The car ride ends, and the four of them board the plane to Malibu. J&B are obviously nervous around eachother. They sit down on the couch on the plane and Jax takes out his lap top while Brenda opens a magazine. Jax watches Brenda reading. He loves the way she twirls a strand of her hair around her forefinger while reading; a small smile playing on her lips. He smiles dreamily as he watches her. Brenda senses his eyes on her and turns. Jax looks away immediately, pretending to be busy working. While Jax works, Brenda takes a turn looking at him. She loves the way he furrows his brow while studying the business numbers; he bites his lip in concentration. Brenda tilts her head and grins. Jax turns, she looks away, pretending to be reading. The games continue - back and forth, back and forth, until finally Brenda puts down her magazine, and leans her head on JAx's shoulder watching him work. He smiles and kisses her forehead. Juliet and Kieron, who have both been watching the game, look at each other, roll their eyes and laugh.

Ever since the world began

It's been that way for man

And women were created

They say love was their destiny

Then why should true love be?

So complicated?

The next scene is Jax, Brenda, Kieron and Juliet pulling up at Jax's house in Malibu in the silver Bentley convertible. Jane, John, Justin, Caroline and Jerry coming running out of the house, and everyone is hugging and laughing. Caroline and Jane pull Juliet and Brenda into the house, and John, Justin and Jerry do the same with Kieron and Jax. As Jax and Brenda are pulled to seperate bedrooms to get dressed, they both look at each other longingly. Brenda blows Jax a kiss and he smiles, blowing a kiss back. We see Jax, Justin, John and Kieron helping Jerry get dressed. All the men are putting on their tuxes and laughing. Their tuxes are black, with pale silvery blue vests and matching bow ties. The vests are the same color as the bridesmaids' dresses. Jerry is wearing a creme colored vest and tie matching Caroline's wedding gown. As Jax watches Jerry get ready for his wedding he gets a distant and dreamy look in his eyes.

I know something about love

You gotta take it

And show him what the world was made of

One kiss will prove it

If you want him to be always by your side

Take his hand tonight -

Swallow your foolish pride

Meanwhile, we now see all the women getting ready for the wedding. The pale pink bedroom that looks out on the beach is filled with dresses, make-up, flowers, and laughter. Jane is helping Brenda and Juliet into their bridesmaids' dresses while the hairdresser does Caroline's hair. The dresses are made of pale, almost silvery blue silk. They are long and form fitting with a slit up the right side. The thin straps are spotted with tiny beads the same color as the dress, and the oval neckline is outlined with the same beads. A ribbon ties around right below the chest and it is covered with the beads also. The rest of the dress is simple and flows to the floor. Brenda and Juliet both have their hair piled ontop of their heads with ringlets and curls falling onto their faces and necks. Their make-up is pale shades of pastel. Around their wrists are the platium ID bracelets with their names on them that Caroline gave them as bridesmaids' gifts. The ID plate has a diamond on each end, and a diamond clasp. Both women are wearing the opal necklaces they received from their admirer, and Chanel glass-like high heel sandals. When they're done dressing, Jane smiles as she gazes at how beautiful they both look. She also looks magnificent - dressed in a Chanel suit made up shimmery creme satin. The jacket and skirt are a shade darker than the pale creme silk blouse she's wearing underneath. Her hair is pulled back in a french twist and she's wearing rose pearl earings. The three women hug, and then go help Caroline into her wedding dress. Caroline's sister Abigail, who is the maid of honor and friend Sarah, another bridesmaid are both wearing the same dresses as Juliet and Brenda and together the 5 women take the wedding gown out of the closet and hold it out for Caroline to step into. The gown is a Prada original made of creme colored silk. It's very simple with an oval neckline, thin straps and a beaded bodice made of pearls, diamonds and opals. Her veil is attached to a platinum headband covered with outlined with pearls, diamonds and opals. Her blond hair is swept back in an elegant upsweep and tendrels fall on her face and neck. When she's completely dressed, all the women hug and head down the staircase. At the base of the staircase, Jax and Kieron are standing waiting for the women so the wedding can start. The ceremony is taking place out by the pool overlooking the beach at dusk. Lillies, gardenias, white roses, and snapdragons are wrapped in vinelike arrangements around the chairs, canopy and are set in magnificent arrangments all around the pool. There are also lit candles everywhere, and a small orchestra next to the canopy. Justin, as best man, is already outside with Jerry

Tell him that you're never going to leave him

Tell him that you're always going to love him

Tell him, tell him, tell him right now.

Brenda is the last women down the stairs, and Jax gasps when he sees her. Their eyes lock and Brenda smiles slightly. Juliet sees how the two of them are looking at eachother and grins.

Oh...yeah....

Tell him that you're never going to leave him

Tell him that you're always going to love him

Tell him, tell him, tell him right now.

Juliet whispers, "now" in Brenda's ear and pushes her towards Jax. Brenda doesn't move. Juliet smiles at her brother and then looks over at Kieron who is whistling softly and grinning. Practically shoving Brenda over to Jax and into his arms, Juliet walks over to Kieron and the two begin talking quietly.

Oh...yeah....

Tell him that you're never going to leave him

Tell him that you're always going to love him

Tell him, tell him, tell him right now.

Jax reaches out and steadies Brenda who stumbled after Juliet pushed her. "Got ya." he teases, as his arms automatically wrap around her waist, drawing her closer to him.

Brenda giggled and looked up at him. She drew in a breath. "You sure do."

Jax smiled and looked her up and down, shaking his head. "Wow..." he whispered half to himself/half outloud.

"What?" Brenda said anxiously, her hand immediately patting her hair, and looking down at her dress to make sure it looked alright.

"You are breathtaking." he smiled. "Bren - you shouldn't be allowed to look this beautiful - it's not fair to Caroline." he shook his head and sighed. "You look like a vision or a dream or some kind of goddess. You look like a fairytale princess." he whispered, looking deeply into her eyes.

Brenda blushed. "You don't look so shabby yourself Prince Charming." she teased, smoothing his vest and jacket. Her hand trailed down his shirt, and Jax caught it in his, and held it against his lips - kissing her palm and not letting go. The feel of his lips against her skin sent tingles up Brenda's spine, and she looked up at him, love shining in her eyes.

"Can you believe we're about to do this?" she asked - nodding towards the wedding aisle. She smiled and shook her head. "It's all so romantic - the flowers, the clothes, the orchestra." When she leaned over to point at the orchestra out the window, a curl fell into her eyes, and Jax reached over and brushed it away. She trembled at his touch, and Jax noticed the quiver and looked at her curiously. Giggling, Brenda tried to make up and excuse for her nerves. Putting her hands over her stomach, she laughed.

"You'd think that I was the one getting married - I have butterflies flying around in my stomach."

"A true romantic, huh?" Jax teased, smiling. He laughed. "Maybe we can find a room to escape to and do some yoga before the ceremony." he teased.

Brenda giggled. "Now that would be a sight, you in your tux, me in my dress sitting on the floor humming and stretching." she touched his face gently. "It's a sweet sacrifice but I know your brothers would never let you live it down."

Jax smiled slightly and brushed his thumb across her cheek, letting his hand run down her neck, across her shoulders and then down her arm. "I'd sacrifice far more for you Brenda. In fact - there isn't anything I wouldn't do for you just to see that beautiful smile dancing on your lips."

Tears came to Brenda's eyes with his declaration and she looked into his eyes. This is it, she whispered to herself. Tell him now. Now - before the moment passes. Biting her lip, she smoothed her hair and glanced up at him. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.

"What is it?" Jax asked curiously. "Sweetie - whatever you want to tell me - just say it."

He was still holding her hand, and now was gently massaging it. His touch gave her assurance and this time she began to speak.

"Jax....honey...." she stuttered. "There's something I have to -"

"Hey lover boy - they'll be plenty of time for this *after* the ceremony." Kieron slapped Jax on the back, interrupting Brenda's confession. "The priest is getting impatient. Everyone has been waiting for you."

Jax looked at Brenda helplessly as Kieron attempted to drag him away. Before he left, he kissed her tenderly on the lips. "Good luck." he whispered. "We'll talk after the ceremony." squeezing her hand, he headed towards the alter. He winked at her before walking out onto the veranda.

Brenda smiled after him and touched her lips where he'd kissed her. "After the cermony Jax - all the secrets will be over, and our life together will finally begin.." she whispered to herself. Still smiling, she got in line behind Juliet and prepared to walk down the aisle towards the man she loved.

The orchestra played Pachebel's Cannon in D as the women walked down the aisle. Brenda's heart swelled as she looked at Jax who was standing next to his brother's under the flower-made canopy. He looked into her eyes, and she smiled a pure, happy, love-filled smile. When she reached the end of the aisle, she stood next to Juliet and watched Caroline walk down to "Here Comes The Bride." Brenda couldn't believe how beautiful she looked. Her entire face was glowing and radiant as she smiled at Jerry who was looking awfully handsome himself. Caroline stepped up the alter, and took Jerry's hand, and the ceremony began.

As the priest began explaining the beauty and serious nature of marriage, Brenda gazed across the alter at Jax who was watching his brother and Caroline with a thoughtful smile on his face. Just looking at him made Brenda mushy inside and she smiled dreamily, imagining marrying the man of her dreams......

They were standing in a flower filled garden on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Jax was wearing a black tux with a creme vest. Brenda's dress was similar to the one she was wearing as a bridemaid except it was creme and she was wearing a long creme veil attached to a pearl and diamond tiara. Juliet, Kieron, Lois, Ned, Robin, Justin, Caroline and Jerry were standing slightly behind her and Jax, and she could see the entire Jacks' family as well as all her friends from PC sitting behind them. The priest was speaking about marriage, but the only thing Brenda was really aware of was Jax - and the love that shone in his eyes as they smiled at each other.

"Do you - Brenda Veronica Barrett, take this man, Jasper Jonathan Jacks, to be your lawfully wedded husband?"

Brenda smiled, tears brimming on her dark lashes. "I do."

The priest smiled slightly. Turning to Jax, who was staring into Brenda's eyes, he said,"Do you - Jasper Jonathan Jacks, take this woman, Brenda Veronica Barrett, to be your lawfully wedded wife?"

"I do." Jax promised grinning.

"Now..." the priest said looking at Brenda, "Repeat after me, I, Brenda Veronica Barrett -

"I Brenda Veronica Barrett -" Brenda said softly gazing into Jax's beautiful blue eyes.

"take thee, Jasper Jonathan Jacks" the priest continued.

"take thee, Jasper Jonathan Jacks..."

"to by thy lawfully wedded husband. To have and to hold.."

Brenda smiled as she said the next phrase, "to by thy lawfully wedded husband. To have and to hold.."

"to love and to cherish, for richer for poorer.."

"to love and to cherish, for richer for poorer.." Brenda continued, tears trailing down her cheeks.

"in sickness and in health till death do us part." he finished.

As she said the final vow, her face lit up. "in sickness and in health till death do us part."

Jax grinned at her when she finished, and he reached across and lightly brushed the tears off her cheeks. "I love you." he mouthed before turning to the priest to begin his own vows.

Brenda's dream ends as we see Jax smiling at her dreamily, slowly, we fade into his fantasy, where he is just about to begin his vows.....

om: May2622

"I Jasper Jonathan Jacks..." he begins, gently stroking Brenda's hand with his thumb as he gazes into her eyes.

"Take thee Brenda Veronica Barrett..." the priest continued.

Jax smiled. "Take thee *Brenda* Veronica Barrett."

"To be thy lawfully wedded wife - to have and to hold..."

"To be thy lawfully wedded wife - to have and to hold..." Jax continued.

"To love and to cherish, for richer for poorer..."

Jax gazed into her eyes, and repeated happily "To love and to cherish, for richer for poorer..."

"In sickness and in health till death do us part." the priest finished.

Brenda smiled as he finished, "In sickness and in health till death do us part." When he was done, Jax sighed and grinned at her. "I love you too." Brenda mouth grinning.

The priest turned to Jax's cousin Benjamin who was 8 years old. He was standing next to little Maria Cerullo who was a flower girl. "The rings please." He handed the rings to Jax and Brenda.

Jax slipped the delicate gold band onto Brenda's slender finger. "With this ring, as a symbol of my undying ove and affection - I thee wed." he whispered.

Brenda smiled and slipped a large matching gold band onto Jax's finger. "With this ring, as a symbol of my undying love and affection - I thee wed."

They were holding hands and gazing at eachother while the priest announced, "With the power invested in me, it is now my pleasure to pronounce you husband and wife." he smiled at JAx and Brenda who were in their own world. "You may kiss the bride."

Grinning, Jax lifted Brenda's veil and kissed her tenderly on the lips. "I love you." he whispered, brushing her cheek with his thumb. Brenda rcarressed his cheek. "I love you more." she whispered back, tears brimming in her eyes. "Impossible." Jax returned laughing.

"Hey Jax - Jaaaaaxxxxxx....." Jax shook his head when he felt Kieron slapping him on the back of the head - something that seemed to be happening a lot recentely. "Buddy - it's time to go."

Jax opened his eyes to realize that the wedding was over and Jerry and Caroline were walking back down the aisle. He had daydreamed through the entire ceremony! He smiled apologetically at Kieron and glanced over at Brenda whom he was supposed to walk down the aisle with. She caught his gaze and grinned at him. He walked over to her, and she threaded her arm through his, resting her head for a second on his shoulder.

"Well - she did it." Jax said referring to Caroline. "Somehow she got that big brother of mine to say the vows and become a married man."

Brenda laughed. "It didn't appear that he was being too tortured." she teased.

"No - it didn't." Jax sighed. "I'm happy for him."

"Me too. Just think - someday it will be you walking down the aisle and saying those vows giving up your bachelorhood forever."

Jax raised his eyebrows. "You think I'd give up my bachelorhood?"

Brenda nodded. "Definitely. When the right woman comes along...." she smiled at him and they walked into the tent which had been set up for the reception. Winking at him she giggled and went over to talk to Juliet

"She already has come along..." Jax mused gazing at Brenda and sighing. "God help me - she already has...

******************************************************************************************************

The reception was magnificent. The sun was setting over the ocean, and the tent was filled with flowers, burning candles and the soft melodies of the music the band and DJ were playing. Waiters and waitresses were walking around serving champagne and hor deurvs and everyone was laughing and talking about how lovely the ceremony was, how gorgeous the dresses and were, and how perfect Caroline and Jerry were together.

"Hey big brother." Justin came up next to Jax who was watching Brenda talk with his mother, grandmother, and sister. He handed him a glass of champange. "I can't believe Jerry actually went through with it." he laughed.

Jax smiled. "I know - after the ceremony I was saying the exact same thing to Brenda." when he said her name, he got a goofy look on his face. Justin noticed and smiled.

"Well - you're going to be next...man, I can hardly believe it. Two of my brothers' getting married in the same year."

Jax laughed. "We'll see...." he trailed off.

"We'll see? What are you talking about? Don't even try and tell me that you and Brenda might not get married. I've never seen a couple more in love than the two of you."

Justin exclaimed shaking his head. "I remember when Kieron called from the Bahamas saying he'd met the future Mrs. Jasper Jacks. Jerry and I didn't believe him, but the second I saw the two of you walk into the hospital in Alaska, I knew that your bachelor days were over."

Jax looked at his younger brother curiously. "Really?" he asked apprehensively.

"Definitely!" he nodded over at Caroline and Jerry who were dancing closely and smiling while whispering to one another. "They're in love, and I'm sure that their marriage will work, but there's something magical about you and Brenda when you're together that just doesn't exist between most couples." he blushed as he said these mushy things. "Hold on to it Jax - and count your blessings - you're a lucky man." He looked over at Brenda who was giggling with Juliet and Jane. "Most people never find the kind of love you and Brenda share."

Jax followed Justin's gaze and smiled softly. The band began to play the song, "She's Got A Way" and as Jax watched Brenda smiling and laughing with his family, he began to remember all the times they'd spent together:

He sees the first time she kissed him at the Outback, her showing up at the penthouse with Chinese food, them playing in the water in the Bahamas, dancing on the boat, swimming with the dolphins, the look on her face when he gave her the bracelet....

She's got a way about her

I don't know what it is

But I know that I can't live without her

She's got a way of pleasin'

I don't know what it is

But there doesn't have to be a reason anywhere

Next he sees her dancing with him at Luke's, skipping into the penthouse wearing sweats and pigtails when she came to sleep over, sleeping on his chest on the couch with a smile on her face, yelling at him when she thought Juliet was "the other woman", chasing after him with whipped creme in Colorado....

She's got a smile that heals me

I don't know why it is

But I have to laugh when she reveals me

She's got a way of talkin'

I don't know why it is

But it lifts me up when we are walkin' anywhere

Images of them dancing in their pajamas in Colorado, telling him she was going to Alaska with him, meeting his parents, confessing that she'd told his Grandmother they were engaged, swimming in the pool with him, him watching her sleep after they made love, them doing yoga after she moved in, the look on her face when he showed up at the spa, her walking down the stairs at the wedding, and then finally her winking at him after the ceremony...

She comes to me when I'm feelin' down

Inspires me without a sound

She touches me, I get turned around

She's got a way of showin'

How I make her feel

And we found the strength to keep on goin'

Coming out of his daydream, Jax looks at Brenda one final time, and she turns around, seeming to sense that he's looking at her. Their eyes meet and she smiles - her entire face and eyes light up with happiness and love, and for a moment time seems to stand still as they gaze at each other. Jax's heart begins to pound as he looks into her eyes, and he gasps with realization, for in that moment he suddenly knew that it was him, not Sonny that she loved.

She's got a light around her

And everywhere she goes

A million dreams of love surround her everywhere

She's got a smile that heals me

Oh I don't know why it is

But I have to laugh when she reveals me anyway

As the song ends, he and Brenda both start walking towards eachother, still gazing into eachother's eyes. They meet in the middle of the dance floor, and Brenda smiles, tapping Jax playfully on the chest. "Hey stranger."

Jax took her hands and laughed. "Hey yourself." Their eyes were still locked together, and Jax could feel his heart pounding in his chest.

The Song "The Way You Looked Tonight" came on - the same song that they'd danced to at Katya's party.

"Ms. Barrett - may I have this dance?" Jax asked formally wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her close to him.

"Mr. Jacks - of course you may." Brenda giggled as she wrapped her arms around his neck.

Some day when I'm awfully low

When the world is cold

I will feel a glow

Just thinking of you

And the way you look tonight

"Are you having a good time?" Jax asked her as they swayed back and forth cheek to cheek.

Brenda drew away slightly and smiled gleefully, "I am having a *perfect* time." she murmered, playing with the hair on the back of his neck and sighing. "Your family is so wonderful....it amazes me how much they love each other."

"They love you too." Jax confessed honestly. He loved the way her eyes lit up when he told her this. Actually, he realized - he loved everything about her. The way she fit so perfectly in his arms, how she could look into his eyes and make him feel like she was looking into his soul, and the way her lips curled slightly whenever she was deep in thought.

"Really?" Brenda asked, looking up at him hopefully. "Because I love them too." she blushed slightly. "In a lot of way - I feel like they're the first family I've ever had."

"Really." Jax confirmed.

Oh but you're lovely

With your smile so warm

And your cheeks so soft

There is nothing for me but to love you

Just the way you look tonight

With each word

Your tenderness grows

Tearing my fears apart

And that laugh that wrinkles your nose

Touches my foolish heart

Brenda looked over at Jerry and Caroline who were dancing quietly, smiles on both their faces. "Ohh...." she sighed. "Look at how happy they are...."

Jax followed her gaze and smiled. "Yeah - she makes him really happy." He looked into her eyes as he said this.

"And I'd say that he makes her really happy also." Brenda added meaningfully. She snuggled closer to him, resting her cheek on his shoulder. "Do you think we'll ever be happy Jax?" she mused.

Jax looked down at her surprised. "Together? Or apart?" he asked, trying to sound blase, but being truly serious.

When she heard his question, Brenda drew away and glanced up at him surprise flashing in her dark eyes. "Either....or do you think our happiness is dependent on us being one or the other?"

You're so lovely

Never, ever change

Keep that breathless charm

Won't you please arrange it?

'Cause I love you

Just the way you look tonight

Jax caught the meaning in her question and smiled happily at her. "You make me happy Bren." he said honestly, brushing her cheek.

Tremors went through her body at his touch and she could feel her eyes filling with tears. "Oh Jax...." she murmered - "you make me happy too." The tears of happiness trickled down her cheeks, and Jax lovingly reached over and brushed them away.

He smiled. "What's this? Crying? I thought I made you happy?" he teased.

Brenda tried to act angry but she was so giddy with happiness that she giggled and wiped some of the tears off her cheeks. "People cry from happiness all the time."

You're so lovely

Never, ever change

Won't you please arrange it?

'Cause I love you

Just the way you look tonight

Just the way you look tonight

Jax looked down at her and closed his eyes, trying to calm his emotions and decide exactly what he was going to say. "Bren...." he began, looking at her seriously. "There is something...well, something that I need to tell you."

Brenda felt her heart stop for a second. She gazed into his eyes and all of a sudden she knew that he loved her. And that he was going to tell her. "Okay..." she said smiling. She caressed his cheek. "Whatever it is honey - just tell me now."

"I....I - well...." he began. Suddenly his cell phone started to ring. "Darn." he muttered, rolling his eyes and answering his cell phone. "What?" he asked furrowing his brow. Brenda watched him curiously, she could tell that whoever it was something about him or her was bothering Jax. "Well - I'm kind of busy right now." Jax said shortly. "What? It *has* to be now? Fine. Yes - I'll be there in a moment." Closing the phone he turned to Brenda frowning. "I'm sorry sweetie - but I have to meet a...um...business partner for a quick meeting outside."

Brenda frowned - not being able to keep the disappointment out of her dark eyes. "Okay..." she said.

Jax brushed her cheek. "I'll be back in few minutes, and we'll finish our talk."

Brenda smiled. "Well - I'll be here waiting for you...."

"Thank you." Jax kissed her cheek and taking one final glance at her, walked out of the tent and into the house. Maybe now he'd finally get some answers about these weird faxes, e-mails and mail he'd been getting....

*****************************************************************************************************

Jax walked into the foyer and glanced out the window apprehensively. Suddenly, he felt a hand around his mouth and another hand pulling both his arms behind his back. "The boss has been waiting for you Mr. Jacks." a deep voice whispered in his ear. Jax was dragged outside and frisked by two men in dark suits. When they were done, they pushed him into a dark limosine. As soon as the door shut, Jax heard the locks and the car began to drive away. "Mr. Jacks..." a dark voice said from the opposite end of the car. "how nice of you to join us. It's a pleasure seeing you again."

Jax turned in his seat and narrowed his eyes. "Troy Montgomery - sorry that I can't say the same for you." he looked around the limosine. "What's going on here? Why do you need to talk to me so urgently."

Troy laughed sinisterly. "Always in a hurry Mr. Jacks aren't we? On to the next deal, the next business, the next....love?" he raised an eyebrow as he said this. Sighing, he sat back on the plush leather seat. Shaking his head, he said, "Patience is a virtue you know - but obviously not one the Jacks' family preaches since your darling sister didn't have any either. Speaking of Juliet - how is the little bitch?"

"You leave my sister out of this." Jax growled.

"Oh! But she's already *so* involved - you see Mr. Jacks - she's my key to your family's undoing..." he cackled as he said this when he saw the alarmed look Jax got in his eyes. "Let me tell you a story..." he leaned forward, folding his hands on his lap and smirking. "It's about a beautiful, rich heiress who fell in love with a poor painter. They were both *very* happy until the woman's snooty family got involved. So, when the painter realized that his days with the woman were coming to an end, he decided to look for a new line of work - stealing paintings. He enlisted the woman's help, and because she loved him, she obliged. Together - they stole famous paintings around the world....Vermeer's, Van Gough's, Monet's....Then one day - the girl left him, and all the money and prestige that the man had planned on having left with her. So the man decided he wanted it back - and he's going to get it...."

Jax rolled his eyes. "Oh please...this is ridiculous. Are you telling me that Juliet helped *you* steal paintings? The part about you being a thief is obviously true, but Jules? Never."

"Of course you're right." Troy said calmly. "Juliet would never steal anything much less famous paintings from museums, but although you and I know that, the police and government won't when they see all the evidence I've creating proving her guilt and making it appear that Juliet Jocelyn Jacks - socialite and living goddess of the earth is one of the biggest thieves of the century. If the evidence gets out...she'll spend the rest of her life in jail, and your precious family name will be destroyed."

"You can't do this Troy." Jax declared firmly. "My family has detectives, connections with the CIA and FBI as well as hundreds of other government and law establishments. We'll prove Juliet's innocence and *you'll* be the one in jail."

Troy looked at him cooly. "I know that. And that's why I have another little piece of information that you might be interested in." he moved over in his seat and flipped on the television. "I have something I'd like to show you." he touched a few buttons, and Jax gasped when he saw images from the wedding reception. Troy grinned wickedly when he saw Jax's reaction. "Yes....the reception. Lovely party....I'm sure you're wondering where I'm getting this video from." Jax nodded grimly. "Well...there are actually two seperate cameras - both tied around the necks of the twwo women you care most about in the world. He moved a dial so that Juliet came into view. She was dancing and laughing with Kieron. "Your sister, and..." he hit another switch and suddenly Jax saw Brenda, dancing with Justin and smiling. "and your love."

"Brenda!" Jax whispered hoarsely.

"Yes...." Troy laughed. "Beautiful girl - I must say. You Jacks' men sure know how to pick them."

"If you lay one hand on Brenda or my sister I swear to god I will kill you." Jax said in a calm, threatening voice.

" I don't need to lay a hand on your little lovey or your sister. All I need to do.." he picked up the control he'd been using to work the cameras. "Is touch this little red button, and they'll both be gone...dead...forever...."

Jax closed his eyes and swallowed, trying to collect his thoughts. He finally leaned forward. Sighing, he said solemnly, "Earlier you said "if" - what is it you want from me Troy?"

Troy smiled. "I'm very impressed with your listening skills Jax...very impressive..." he clapped his hands and Jax glared at him. Clearing his throat, Troy smirked. "Here's what I want...I have a baby sister, Gretchen. I want you to marry her, so that she has your prestigious name and money. You will *stay* married to her, and send your darling love Brenda off into the sunset with that mobster lover of hers' Sonny Corinthos. I will hold onto the incriminating documents I have regarding your sister forever...so that you won't be tempted to leave Gretchen and find Brenda. No one is to know anything about this. The necklaces both Juliet and Brenda are wearing are bugged - I can see and hear everything around them, so don't think of writing notes to explain b/c I'll find out. ALSO - you might want to know that if anyone were to try to remove the necklaces - a bomb would go off, killing everyone involved immediately."

"you are sick." Jax growled, shaking his head.

"I know. But I'm having fun!" Troy smiled.

"Let's say I go along with this *plan* of yours...why should I trust that you won't kill Bren or Juliet with the necklace after I marry your sister."

"You can take the necklace back from Brenda right before she leaves with Sonny. Once Brenda has left, you can get it from Juliet also." Troy raised an eyebrow. "Any questions?"

Jax swallowed. "You promise that Brenda won't be hurt if I do this?" he asked seriously.

"Scouts' honor." Troy joked, holding up his hand. "Now Mr. Jacks - do we have a deal or not." he held out his hand.

Slowly Jax extended his hand also. "Deal." he whispered feeling his heart snap in two and all his beautiful dreams of happiness disappear.

"Wonderful. My sister will be arriving at your penthouse tomorrow afternoon. See that you're there to greet her." With that said, Jax felt the car stop, and Troy opened the door, pushing him out onto his driveway and leaving Jax to go tell the woman he loved that they could never be together...

*****************************************************************************************************

Jax wasn't sure how he climbed up the driveway and entered the house, but somehow he did. All he could think about was seeing Brenda and telling her this horrible lie. But he had to do it. His life would be worthless if she was gone. He could handle giving her up to Sonny as long as he knew she was alive.

"My prince has returned." she teased, running over to him and kissing him passionately on the lips. Laughing, she drew away and looked up at him. "Were you off slaying dragons and dueling with black knights?"

"Something like that." Jax replied, revelling in how good she felt in his arms and how she could light up the whole room with one small smile.

"Did you miss me?" she asked, caressing his cheek with her hand and smiling.

Jax took her hand and kissed it. More than you'll ever know...he thought to himself, but outloud, he said seriously. "Bren - we really need to talk."

"I know." Brenda nodded looking serious herself. "I have some things I need to say to you myself."

Jax could feel himself dying as he saw the happiness and love shining in her eyes. He had to look down at his hands because he couldn't take it anymore. "Well - do you mind if I go first?"

"Of course not." Brenda smiled lovingly at him, and sat down at the table next to them, Jax joining her.

"Well....." Jax mumbled, trying to think of exactly how he was going to do this. "I haven't been completely honest with you about something." Brenda opened her mouth to say she hadn't been honest either but Jax held up her hand to quiet her. "A couple weeks after I met you...I was on, umm....I was on business." Jax was talking really quickly, "and I met this woman."

"Okay...." Brenda could feel a sick feeling growing in her stomach. She tried to make eye contact with him, but he averted her glance, scared that if she looked into his eyes she'd see the turmoil he was going through and realize he was lying.

"And, I've umm...I've fallen in love with her." he said the words quietly. Looking up he saw her eyes filling with tears, and he had to grip the sides of his chair underneath the table to keep himself from reaching out and taking her into his arms, soothing her tears, and telling her how much he loved her. "You need to go away with Sonny Bren - it's the way we always planned."

Brenda nodded, tears spilling down her face. "Excuse me." she whispered, getting up from the table, and running into the house. Jax watched her go, knowing that he couldn't comfort her and that he'd never feel happiness again.

*****************************************************************************************************

The next twenty-four hours were a blur for both Jax and Brenda. They barely said two words to eachother as they packed all their things, and got on the plane to return to Port Charles. Jax knew Brenda wasn't angry at him, and she'd even tried to smile pitifully at him a number of times to show this, but both their hearts were breaking and there were no words they could say to make things better. When Jax had spoken he'd said that he'd break the news to Lois, Ned, Juliet, Kieron and the rest of their friends and family after Sonny and Brenda left town. Brenda had simply nodded, wiped away her tears, and returned to staring out the window. Jax was feeling helpless, lost and his hands were nearly scarred from clenching them to keep himself from hugging, touching or loving Brenda.

When they returned to the penthouse, it was already noon, and Brenda asked for some time alone while she packed all her things. Jax sadly agreed, not wanting to miss any last minutes they had together, but understanding her need to be by herself. He walked out on the docks, thinking about how wonderful his time with Brenda had been and cursing Troy for doing this to both of them and ruining their lives. At 3 p.m. he went to the airport to pick up Gretchen. To say he hated her at first sight was an understatement. She was tall, beautiful - had blond hair and blue eyes...she was also loud, obviously stupid and class-less. Every time he looked at her, Jax thought about Brenda and how different they were. He dropped Gretchen off at a hotel near the PC hotel, promising to pick her up in the morning after he'd said good-bye to Brenda and had a good night's sleep. She grudgingly agreed and made some snide comment about this not being a great welcome for his future wife. Jax slammed the door to her room in her face and headed to the post office to pick up the package his Mom was supposed to send him. It was eight-thirty by the time he had gotten everything together, and returned to the penthouse. When he got there, Brenda was already gone. She left a note saying Sonny had called and asked her to meet him at 9 p.m. instead of 10:30. Next to the note was the engagement ring Jax had given her. Putting the ring in his pocket, Jax grabbed the gift he'd gotten Brenda and raced to the pier.

*****************************************************************************************************

Brenda was leaning against the rail, watching the water when Jax arrived. She didn't hear him come, and he stood on the stairs for a few moments, just watching her and trying to mentally take a picture of her so that he could remember everything about her. The wind was blowing her hair softly and her bag tipped over causing her to turn around and see him on the stairs.

"Jax." she gasped, hastily wiping her eyes and trying to keep him from seeing that she'd been crying. "You got my note. I wasn't sure you'd come."

"Silly girl." Jax teased, smiling for the first time in what seemed like years. "Of course I came." he walked over to the rail and stood next to her. He looked at the small black bag she'd packed and laughed. "That's all you're bringing? Is this a joke?" he teased, trying to lighten up the mood.

Brenda nodded. "Sonny said we'll buy new things once we get wherever we're going." she clarified. Out of the corner of her eye she watched Jax lovingly. She loved him so much - even now, as he was standing here, breaking her heart, she loved him.

Music started playing from the window of an apartment over the pier, and J&B both turned when they heard "I Will Always Love You." by Whitney Houston playing. Jax smiled. "One last dance?" he asked, looking into her eyes.

Silently Brenda nodded, and floated into his arms, holding him close - not wanting to ever let go.

If I should stay...

I would only be in your way...

And so I go..

And yet - I know...

I'll think of you.

Every step of - my way....

And I Will Always - Love you

I - Will Always...Love you......

Jax held her close, savouring the way she felt in his arms, and the delicious smell of her skin. His eyes filled up with tears as he realized that this was the last time that he'd ever hold her.

Bittersweet..memories

That is all - I'm taking, with me...

So good-bye, please - don't cry...

We both know - I'm not what you -

You need....

And I Will ALways - Love you...

I - Will Always - Love You....

Brenda bit her lip trying to keep herself from sobbing as she rested her cheek against Jax's chest. This couldn't be happening. Why was she losing him? she wondered. She ran her fingers through his hair sighing.

I hope - life treats you kind

And I hope...you have all you've - dreamed of...

And I wish you - joy and happiness.

But above all things - I

But above all things - I wish you...

Love....

And I Will ALways - Love you...

I - Will Always - Love You....

As the song ends, J&B continue to hold eachother for a few minutes, and then Brenda reluctantly pulls away, looking at her watch. It's 8:52. "You better be going..." she said quietly. "Sonny will be here soon."

"Yeah." Jax murmered, not taking his eyes off of her. For a few moments they both gazed at eachother. Finally Jax broke the eye contact and reached into his pocket pulling out a small box and the engagement ring. Taking her hand in his, he put the ring in her palm and closed her fingers around it. She looked at him questionally and he smiled. "Please take it." he whispered. "It's yours. I could never let anyone else have it and I can't return it. Please." Brenda nodded pitifully and was about to walk away when Jax handed her the box. "Open this after I leave." he said smiling. "Now I have one more thing to ask from you. Your necklace." he pointed at the opal necklace around her neck. "Cosmo wants to photograph them." he lied.

Brenda silently took the necklace off and handed it to him. He sighed with relief when nothing happened and the tiny bomb was safely in his pocket. "Well Good-bye." Brenda whispered, touching his face softly.

"Good bye." Jax murmered. He caressed her face one final time, gave her a tender kiss on the cheek and walked away.

Brenda broke down the second he disappeared. Trying to gain self control - she opened the box he had given her.. What she saw inside caused her to gasp. Dropping the box, she removed the tiny figure and the note attached to it.

When I was a little boy, Gram gave me a figure much like this one. It is an Aboriginal Charm and it is supposed to bring Love, Strength, Magic and Luck to it's beholder. Unfortunately, I lost the one my Gram gave me on a beach one day, but I'm giving this new one to you. I hope it brings you everything you dream of. - Jax.

"It's fate Jasper Jacks. You're my prince - and no matter what you say, we're going to be together." Brenda whispered to herself as she looked at the tiny figure and realized that her connection to Jax was stronger than she'd ever dreamed....

To Be Continued....

PREVIEW OF NEXT INSTALLMENT: I'm not saying what's going to happen - but let's just say that the "three little words" will definitely be said right before J&B flee PC together with Juliet and Kieron and begin a whole new adventure...
