Getting to The Truth-65&66
**GETTING TO THE TRUTH**
Chapter 65
Sonny jerked Bethany up from where she had been sitting on the floor of the train car, and pushed her towards the door that he had just opened. Her knees shook and she stumbled slightly, her bound hands reached out to break her fall, but Sonny caught her and pushed her to the edge of the car. She looked at Mel helplessly. Mel stared calmly into her eyes for a moment then slowly raised her eyes to the top of the open doorway, then back to Beth's eyes again. Bethany's forehead wrinkled in confusion, knowing Mel was trying to tell her something, but unable to figure out what.
"Don't you have any last words for your beloved sister?" Sonny sneered at Mel.
Mel never took her eyes off of Beth's as she spoke quietly, "Remember what Gramps told us just before he died..."
Beth's mind began to whirl as she tried to frantically remember Grandfather Langley's last words to them. She drew a blank and stared at Mel who looked at Beth's bound hands then at the ceiling. The gruff voice of their grandfather slowly came back to her "I'm going to heaven hands first...reaching up as high as I can...."
Mel knew the moment Bethany figured out what she was trying to say to her. Beth's eyes widened slightly as she looked upward, her eyes catching on something then she swung her glance back to Mel. She nodded at her and mouthed, "I love you!" Libby watched the exchange of looks and words between the two sisters in fascination.
"Well...that's not much of a good-bye...but if that's how you want to end it..." Sonny said as he started to push Bethany just as a flash of light hit the moving train. Her arms stretched as high as they could and jumped just as Sonny pushed.
Mel took advantage of the distraction to swing her leg at Jason and kicked his gun out of his hand before he knew what had happened. The other hood, startled, raised his gun to fire, but before he had even taken aim, Mel shot him between the eyes. He slunk to the ground, dead, with a surprised look on his face. Jason dove for his gun, but Mel beat him to it, kicking him in the face rendering him unconscious.
Sonny screamed in outrage at the sudden turn around of events. He turned back to Bethany, who was hanging in the door, as though suspended in air. He went to push her again, only to be met by the black boot of Bethany's right foot, as she kicked him with all her might. Sonny stumbled backwards, grabbing his throbbing face.
Libby laughed at the sight, enraging Miranda. She charged at the Libby at full speed, her arms outstretched to push her out of the train. Libby side-stepped her just as Miranda reached her. But Miranda managed to grab her shirt as she hung precariously at the edge of the door.
******************************************************************************
The three men in the helicopter gasped as they saw Bethany being pushed out of the train car. But let out a small sigh of relief as they saw that Jeff had somehow managed to grab her to keep her from falling.
"He's having trouble pulling her up," Jerry said.
"How the hell did he keep from falling with her?" Jax wondered out loud.
"Oh!!! Good kick!" Jerry exclaimed as he watched Bethany land a sound kick to Sonny's face.
"Oh my God!" Mac exclaimed as Miranda went flying out of the door, but she had a hold of something that kept her from falling. "Get us down to that train!" he yelled at the pilot.
"Libby..." Jerry screamed in anguish as he realized that Miranda had grabbed hold of his wife to keep herself from falling...and in the process was slowly pulling the both of them out of the train. His heart stopped beating as he saw Miranda slip a little further, pulling Libby even closer to the edge. "GET US DOWN TO THE TRAIN!" He screamed at his pilot.
"I'm trying...but with these wind currents, it's impossible to land it on a moving train!" the pilot yelled back.
"You don't have to land it...just get it close enough for us to jump to the train," Jax yelled back at him. The pilot nodded and started maneuvering the helicopter closer. The three men prepared to jump as the helicopter drew nearer to the train.
"This is as close as I'm going to be able to get it....jump now...I can't hold it here forever!" the pilot yelled back at them.
Jax jumped before the pilot had even finished speaking....Jerry followed. Mac waited until he saw the Jacks brothers land on the train before taking a deep breath and jumping himself. Mac righted himself and saw Jax and Jerry running to the front of the train.
The Jacks brothers reached Jeff just as he managed to pull Bethany up and into his arms. Bethany was covering his faces in kisses while Jeff was trying to get them into a more secure position on the top of the train. But Jax noticed he was grinning from ear to ear. Jax rolled his eyes and rushed with Jerry to the end of the car to help those still left in the box car.
*******************************************************************************
Jerry and Jax burst into the car and took in the scene before them. Sonny was writhing in pain on one side of the car. One thug was laying face down in a small pool of blood, Jason lay a couple of feet beside him. Jax didn't know if he was dead or not...but he wasn't moving, so he didn't worry about him. Mel was now helping Libby rid herself of a clinging Miranda, while trying to keep both of them from falling. Miranda was clinging desperately to Libby, a crazed look in her eyes. Jerry rushed to help his wife. He reached over Libby and Mel and grabbed Miranda's arm, forcibly removing her hold on Libby and pushed his wife out of the way. Jerry's glare at Miranda was filled with anger and hatred. Mel rushed to Libby and untied her hands.
Jax pulled Mel into his arms, "Are you alright?" he whispered into her ear.
She nodded and squeezed him tight. Jax pulled back and took her head in his hands, stared into her eyes for a long moment then took her lips with his. Kissing her fiercely at first, then softening the kiss filled with love and longing. He pulled back, their lips clinging for a moment before finally parting. He pulled her close again and hugged her tightly before finally becoming aware, once again, of his surroundings.
Jerry still held Miranda over the open doorway.
"I say...let her fall," Libby said to Jerry.
Jerry turned his eyes upon his bloodthirsty wife. Libby smiled at him. "My hero!" she said, hugging his back.
Jerry hauled Miranda back into the car and flung her down on the floor. He turned to his wife and crushed her in his arms, "I'm always your hero...and don't you ever forget that."
"As if you would ever let me forget it," Libby said against his neck.
"If you ever do anything this stupid again...I'll turn you over my knee," he whispered the threat in her ear.
"No you won't," she said, tightening her hold on him, "You'll play hero again...threaten me again...and then we'll start it all over again."
Jerry laughed in spite of his anger, "You think so...huh?"
Libby smiled brightly at him, "I know so..."
"I love you Libby Winters-Jacks...even if you are promising me a life time of heart attacks and ulcers over worrying about what you'll get yourself into next."
"I love you too, Jerome Jacks...even though you promise to be a big jerk for the rest of my life."
Jerry laughed and hugged her close.
"Damn!" Jax said.
"What?" Jerry asked, turning around to face his irate brother.
"The little weasel got away..." Jax said in disgust.
"He's got to still be on the train," Jerry said, letting Libby go, "He's too big of a wuss to jump from a moving train."
"Where's Mac?" Jax asked.
"Mac is here?" Mel asked.
"Well...he jumped with us. I saw that he landed on the train okay...but I didn't pay attention to him after that. I assumed he would follow us." Jerry stated.
The four of them looked at each other and groaned.
"I'm going to find Sonny," Jax said.
"Oh no you don't," Mel stated, "I'LL get Sonny...you find Mac."
"We'll both go after Sonny, maybe we'll run across Mac while we're at it."
"Fine," Mel relented, "Jerry...you and Libby tie up these two," she pointed to Jason and the cowering Miranda. "Then get to the engine car and stop this train."
"I'm going with you," Jerry said.
"No you're not....I need you up here, making sure these two are secure...stopping the train...and getting Jeff and Bethany off the roof."
"We're already off the roof," Jeff's voice boomed into the car.
Bethany ran to Mel and hugged her tightly, "You had me scared for a minute...I actually believed you were going to let that grease ball push me out the door."
"Nahhhh...but I had to let Jeff play the hero for you...he's been pestering me all night about it," Mel grinned at Jeff as she let go of her sister then wrapped her arms around her friend, "Good catch Superman!"
"Just another day in the life of the Superman!" Jeff preened.
Jax pulled Mel out of Jeff's arms and tucked her under his arm. Jeff grinned at him.
"We're busy now...you two can chat later," Jax said as explanation for his possessiveness.
"Oh yeah??? What are you two doing?"
"We're going after Sonny. Did you see him by any chance?" Mel asked checking her gun, making sure it still had bullets.
"No...but we are across the gorge now...so he can jump and land on solid ground...probably shouldn't wait too long to go after him." Jeff said.
"That's just what I was thinking," Mel said, heading for the door.
Jax and Mel left the car.
"I'm going to follow them," Jerry said to Libby. "I want you guys to do what Mel said...tie these two up...and watch them, shoot them if they even look cross-eyed at you. Jeff, you go to the engine car and stop this train." Jerry shouted his orders as he left the car.
********************************************************************************
Jax and Mel made their way carefully through several cars in their search for Sonny.
"Well, he's been through here," Mel said in disgust as she picked up a couple of wires.
Jax looked at her with a question in his eyes.
She showed him the wires, "He's let three of his thugs loose."
"Great," Jax said in disgust as headed for the next door.
"Wait!" Mel said, digging into one of the crates.
Jax watched as she dug around for a moment, then pulled out a handgun.
"Well...here's a gun for you...but I don't see any ammunition...look in that crate over there," she said, pointing to a crate beside him.
Jax opened the crate, only to find another box of guns, but no bullets. They went through 2 other crates before they finally found the ammunition they were looking for. Mel quickly picked out the correct clips for the gun, popped one in and handed the gun to Jax.
"You know how to use that...right?"
"Of course," Jax said, pushing the loading pin back, setting the gun ready for fire.
Mel cocked her eyebrow at him, "I don't want to know how you became an expert on guns, do I?"
Jax grinned at her, "Ummmm...no!"
"That's what I thought," Mel said and tossed him another clip, "Here's a spare. Remember though...we want him alive."
"I want him dead," Jax said, pocketing the extra clip.
"So does the majority of the population...however...I would prefer to see him slowly die from claustrophobia in a tiny jail cell."
"He'll never go to jail...he'll find some way out of it," Jax said.
"Jax...." Mel said warningly.
"If we can get him alive, we'll do that. But if I have to kill him...I won't think twice about it. Don't ask anything more from me than that."
Mel looked at him and slowly nodded, "Okay, I can live with that....I hope."
Jax nodded at her and the two made their way down the train. After searching a couple more cars, they found one of Sonny's thugs waiting in ambush for them. Mel recognized him as the one that Jeff had rearranged his face. The two quickly disposed of him and continued on their search.
They ran into the second man in the next car. The man managed to fire a couple of rounds at them before Mel took aim and buried a bullet in the man's shoulder. He dropped his gun and fell back against the side of the car, bleeding profusely. They tied him up as fast as they could and opened the door.
Jerry was fighting with the third thug between the cars. Jax stepped back as Jerry threw the man off the train.
"I thought I told you to stay back with Libby," Mel said as Jerry caught his breath.
"Since when have I ever followed orders?" Jerry asked. "Come on...Corinthos just went into the next car. I'm going back on top and try to trap him from the other side."
Mel nodded her approval and they waited for Jerry to crawl back on top of the train and make his way to the other end of the car.
"Ready?" Mel asked Jax.
Jax nodded, "I've been ready for along time now."
"Be careful...don't do anything stupid. And listen Jax...you do what I say. This is still a police matter."
Jax nodded, but his face was determinedly grim. He kicked the door open and Mel went in first in a crouched position, her gun aimed. Jax followed her into the car. The car was empty of crates...the only other thing in the car was Sonny. And he was holding a gun to Mac Scorpio's head.

"Stay back...or I'll kill him!" Sonny yelled as he pressed the gun to Mac's head.
Jax shrugged, "Go ahead...he won't be missed."
"You think I'm kidding Candy Boy?"
"No...I'm just saying I'm not going to weep over the fact that Scorpio is dead...and I don't think anyone else will either," Jax said, taking a step closer.
"Get back...I mean it..." Sonny said in a panic, his hand with the gun shaking.
"Dammit Jax!" Mac shouted.
"Shut up Mac!" Jax shouted back.
"Shut up! Both of you!" Sonny shouted. "Now...I'm going to walk out of here...and...and you two are going to stay right there."
"And then what?" Mel finally spoke.
"And then I'm getting off this train."
"And then what?" Mel asked again.
"And then it's none of your concern," Sonny said. "Do you honestly think you are going to take me to jail? Even if you succeeded in that, do you think I'd stay there? I ALWAYS beat the rap!"
"Do you have another Mafia Princess you can marry to get you out of it this time?" Jax snorted. "The word is out on you man....seems your fellow wiseguys don't think too highly of you..they certainly aren't going to let you marry their daughters."
"SHUT UP!!!" Sonny yelled, sweat running down his face. He pressed the gun into Mac's neck again. "I'm through talking...back off...or Scorpio here gets a bullet in his brain."
"Back off Jax...Officer Langley...do what he says," Mac stated fiercely.
"Oh the hell with this," Jax said in disgust. He looked at Mac for only a second then lowered his gun slightly. Sonny grinned...then stunned as Jax fired his gun.
Mac fell and grabbed his leg that was already bleeding profusely, "You son of a....."
Sonny stared at Jax and backed to the door, pulling it open.
"Don't move!" Mel yelled at him.
Sonny growled at her and started to aim his gun at her, she fired her gun. The gun dropped from his hand as the bullet went through his wrist shattering the bone. He grabbed his wrist and turned to escape. But ran into Jerry.
"Good shot!" Jax said to Mel, as he started towards Sonny.
"I do believe this little pipsqueak was trying to get away," Jerry said snidely to Jax.
Jax grinned at him as Sonny tried to push Jerry out of way with his one good hand. He finally managed a small space underneath Jerry's arm and slipped through.
"He's damn slippery!" Jerry said to Jax, turning to Sonny.
Mel ran to Mac to help him, as he lay in the corner still cussing Jax and trying to stop the bleeding.
Jax stepped out on the small railing between the cars and watched as Sonny made his way to the door on the next train and tried to get the door open.
"Give it up, Corinthos," Jax said. "You aren't getting away."
Sonny turned on him with a wild look in his eyes. Jax looked at him and saw that Sonny had turned into a wild animal that was suddenly caged. Jerry stepped to Sonny, but Jax pulled him back and shook his head.
A small sound started coming from Sonny as he looked to escape. His head went from side to side, searching for a miracle to get off the moving train. The sound grew louder until it steadily became an unending scream. He looked at Jax and Jerry, his mind blaming them for his predicament. It was all their fault, his mind screamed to him even as his the unending scream escaped from his mouth. He leaped at Jax, who quickly side stepped him. He fell between the two cars, his feet dragging the tracks below him. Jax went to pull him back to safety, but he shook his head wildly, then stopped his struggles...looked at his enemy...and let go.
Jax turned his head, unable to watch, his eyes landing on Mac and Mel who were sitting by the open door, watching everything that happened. Jax met Mel's eyes as they heard Sonny's screams...then silence.
Suddenly, the train jolted. Jax grabbed Jerry as he slipped and pushed him into the boxcar with Mac and Mel. Jerry grabbed hold of Jax and hauled him into the car, just as it flew off the track.
********************************************************************************
"Help!" yelled Libby just as she was thrown across the car and landing on Miranda. Bethany, who had been sitting opposite of Jason, keeping her eye on him, suddenly found herself sitting in his lap.
"What the hell is going on?" Libby yelled to no one in particular as the train stopped moving. She used Miranda's head to help herself up and Miranda snarled at her.
Bethany realized where she was now sitting and looked at Jason, who looked back at her with cold-dead eyes. She shivered slightly and pushed herself off him. She brushed herself off then went to look outside to see what had happened.
"Oh my God!" She whispered as she stared at the destruction of the derailed train. "Melanie!"
"Bethany!" Jeff yelled opening the other door of the boxcar. He spotted her and ran to her and pulled her into his arms. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine...but Jeff...look!" She pointed to tangled cars before them. "Melanie and the other's are in that mess somewhere," she stated as she climbed down from the car and started making her way through the mess.
"Jerry!" Libby screamed as she ran after Beth.
Jeff looked at Miranda and Jason, still tied up to the side of the car, "Don't make me come after you, you won't be happy when I find you...and I WILL find you!" He threatened them then made his way after the ladies.
Bethany and Libby yelled desperately for their loved ones, trying to locate them. Bethany pulled desperately on one of the doors of a boxcar laying on it's side. Jeff reached over her shoulder and pulled the door open for her. The two searched the car while Libby went to the next one. They searched every car down the tracks until they got to the last couple of cars. Both of them were turned upside down, the tops caved in from the roll. Bethany and Libby looked at each other worriedly as Jeff tried to get the door open. Their panic forming a knot in their throats.
"I can't get this open!" Jeff said in frustration. "Go around to the other side...see if we can get in there," he instructed Libby.
She ran around as he instructed, "Jeff....the doors not even on...I'm going in!"
"Libby WAIT!!" Jeff yelled running to her, Bethany hot on his heels.
But Libby had already crawled inside, "Oh God...They're in here!" she yelled back at them.
Bethany dove for the door, but Jeff pulled her back, "Jeff...I've got to go in there. I'm a doctor...they might need me."
"Let me go first..."
"Hurry!"
Jeff climbed into the car and offered his hand to Bethany and pulled her in carefully. Libby was leaning over Mac who was groaning softly. She motioned for Bethany to check him out and moved over to Mel, who was unconscious, her arm leg positioned strangely.
"How is she?" Bethany yelled over to Libby.
Libby looked at Jeff, who was checking on Jax. He raised his eyebrow at her. She bit her lip and felt for a pulse on Mel's neck. She breathed a sigh of relief when she felt a slight thumping against her fingers. "She's alive!" She shouted at Bethany. "But her leg is sure to be broken."
Libby looked around the car and swallowed hard, "Jerry....where's Jerry?"
A loud groan coming from underneath the caved in wall of the car alerted her to his location. She tried to pull the wall off of him, but couldn't lift it. His groan grew louder. "Jerry?????" She yelled at him.
"Quit yelling woman!" Jerry's voice boomed at her then groaned again.
Jeff helped Libby lift a portion of the wall away from Jerry so that she could get to him. "Jerry? Honey?"
"Ummm...honey sure sounds good at this point..." Jerry mumbled.
Libby blushed, "Is that all you ever have on your mind?" she asked, irritated, but relieved at the same time. She pulled his head on her lap and stroked his face, while checking for broken bones at the same time.
"When it comes to you...that's all I have on my mind," Jerry said, opening one eye to look at her. "I'm okay, Love...I'll be sore as hell, but I'm sure I can still handle turning you over my knee for that well deserved spanking tonight."
"You are hopeless...you know that???" Libby said, pushing his head off her lap.
He grabbed her hand, "And you wouldn't have me any other way...besides...after the spanking I intend to make mad passionate love to you."
"If you try to spank me, you'll never make any kind of love to me again...especially mad passionate love," she stated, then spoiled her stance by leaning over and kissing him softly, "Thank God you're okay!"
He squeezed her hand, "How's everyone else?"
"Pretty beaten up. Since you are okay, I'm going to go help with them."
"I'll help."
"No...you stay here. You faint at the sight of blood," she said, making her way back to Mel and Jax.
"Faint once at the sight of blood and you're branded for life," Jerry mumbled as he tried to stand, groaning as he did so.
"Is everyone alright in here?" A voice boomed from the doorway.
Jeff turned to the conductor who had finally made his way to them, "Get on the horn and call in medical help," he shouted. The conductor nodded and left.
"This is a bullet hole," Bethany stated, taking off her shirt and tying it around Mac's leg. Mac sucked in his breath in pain. "Who shot you?"
"That Jackass Jax" Mac growled, looking over at the still unconscious Jax. His eyes landed on Mel, who was being attended to by Libby. "Is she okay?"
"Beth, what do I do? Should I move her?" Libby asked.
"No!" Beth yelled. "I'll be right there." She turned back to Mac. "Hold this tight against the wound, I'll be back in a little bit." Mac nodded at her as she turned to her sister.
She quickly checked out Melanie quickly. "We don't want to move her neck," she told Libby. "Hold her head still...but first...give me your shirt."
Libby looked at her a moment then nodded and took her shirt off and handed it to her. Bethany ripped it in two. Then looked for a couple of short boards and turned back to Mel. "Okay...keep her head still, I'm going to straighten her leg out," she told Libby.
An hour later, the train wreck site was over run by police, emergency workers and reporters. Miranda and Jason had been taken into custody, as well as the extra thugs, the injured had been airlifted to General Hospital, and Sonny's body was being scraped off the train tracks and placed into a body bag.
