隨著人口的增加，每天產生的垃圾亦隨即增加，而導致堆填區不勝負荷，終會有飽和的一天，需另覓新的地方繼續堆放廢物，令人們的活動面積大大減少，故修復堆填區就可算是刻不容緩。以下就是修復堆填區的目的……
As
the population in Hong Kong continue rising, the production of waste increase,
the landfill will be overload. It will full in the future. It uses to find more
land for store the waste, so it is necessary for restoring the landfills. Below
are the purpose of restoring landfills......
修復堆填區的目的
Purpose of Landfill Restoration
1.
在巿區上提供更多綠化土地Makes
the urban area having more greenland
•修復的土地都栽種了很多綠色植物
Green Plants can be found in the restored
landfill.
2.
回饋社會Benefits
to the society
•堆填區存在著很多對環境及身體有害的氣體，但經過修復後，土地就可以回饋社區
There are many toxic gas in the landfill. But
after restoration, the land can be provided for the society.
3.
給巿民提供更多休憩用地Provides
more Recreational Facilities
•修復的土地給巿民提供更多休憩設施，例如生態公園、高爾夫球場、休憩處、多用途球場等等。
船灣是第一個向公眾開放的堆積區，內有臨時高爾夫球練習場，提供一百四十五條球道。其中52條球道將開放三十個月，其餘的93條則開放十八個月。稍後，於二零零三年中，該處將會改建為一個永久的九洞高爾夫球場。
The
restored land can provide more recreational facilities fopr the public. For
example, rest gardens.
Shuen Wan Landfill is
the first landfill opened for the public, it has a temporatory golf centre. It
has 145 pitches. In the mid- 2003, it will have a 9 holes golf pitch.

4.
減少香港的能源消耗Reduce
the amount of energy supply
•以環保的方法去利用堆填區內產生出來的氣體，令香港的化石燃料的需求下降
第一個再用氣體的設施已於一九九九年七月設置於船灣堆積區，為中華電力提供電源。
Use
the landfill gas at a environmental-friendly way. Therefore the demand of
fossil fuels decreased.
The first energy reuse
plant has planted on the Shuen Wan Landfill on July 1997. It supplies energy
for the China Light & Power.

5.
減少溫室氣體的排放Reduce
the amount of Greenhouse Gas Produced
•在堆填區內產生的氣體能夠以燃燒或再用的方法減少氣體的排放
The Landfill gas can treat with burning or
reusing.
