Milarepa was born
around 1050 C.E. One of the most beloved saints of Tibet. He practiced
Vajrayana meditation in the caves of Tibet and Nepal. He composed thousands
of inspired sacred songs. He was one of the founders of the Kagyu Order.
When his father died (1057/60),
his father's brother began to exploit Milarepa's mother and the two
children.
In 1068 Milarepa went to study black magic in Central Tibet. In
about 1070, he cast a deadly magic spell which killed 25 relatives,
but the uncle and aunt did not die. For a period of nine years, in revenge
for their threats, he sent hail storms against the crops of the villagers.
Milarepa practiced black magic until 1088.
He experienced repentance and initiated studying Rdzogs Chen, but without
good results. He did severe penance under Marpa the Translator, disciple
of the Indian Guru Naropa (1089/94). In 1097 he returned to his
village and met his sister Peta. He made a three- year solitary retreat,
1094-97. In 1100 he made a retreat at La phyis Gang, where he attained
enlightenment.
He trained disciples and composed a great many Dharma songs between
1100 and 1123. He died, probably in 1123, leaving no relics; his body
disappeared into a rainbow body.
