Captian John C.T Glossop is related to my Glossop family. I don't have the direct information on where just yet but my aunty has a letter to one of my ancestor's from him. He talked about meeting another Glossop but didn't know if he was a relation or not and about his family in Bakewell in Derbyshire. From family talking about him over the years we gathered that he was a cousin of one of my ancestors.
Captian Glossop apparently started WWI with the first shot fired into the German ship the Emden. My Mum always said we started the war. "Typical bloody Glossop's always startin' a fight" but I just thought it was a bit of a story until I went searching and found that what she said was partly true. We didn't start the war really, just fired the first shot into the Emden which started the fighting.
Great War Primary Documents Archives lists Captian Glossop's Report.
Click here to see what Banjo Paterson wrote about Captain Glossop, they were friends apparently.
Banjo Paterson also wrote a poem about Captain Glossop which I am currently looking for to put here.

"In 1918-19 surveyors were busy surveying the blocks of what was
decided to
be called the 'Glossop' area, named in honour of Captain Glossop
of the HMAS
Sydney which sank the German vessel 'Emden'. A township was
also surveyed
and this was gazetted as a town on the 25th August 1921."
