Last Will & Testament of John Glossop
of Handley, Derbyshire, Eng

Back in the 1600's a lot of people couldn't read or write and our John was one of them that's why he signed his name with an X.

In the name of God Amen on the fifteenth day of Jan in the year of our Lord God 1729/30.

I John Glossop of Middle Hanley in the Parish of Stavely & County of Derby being in of weak in body but of perfect mind & memory thanks to a god, do make & ordain this my last will and testament in manner & form following, that is to say first & principally I recommend my soul into the hands of almighty God that gave it my body to the earth to be buried in a decent manner at my discretion of my executors and as to the worldly estate within it hath pledged almighty God to blessing with I give details & dispose of the same as follows:

Imprimis (Imprimatur, means official approval)

Item I give & bequeath unto my son John Glossop One Shilling

Item I give & bequeath unto my son Godfrey Glossop Five Pounds

Item I give & bequeath unto my son Peter Glossop Five Pounds

Item I give & bequeath unto my son Stephen Glossop One Shilling

Item I give & bequeath unto my son in law Joshua Revill One Shilling

Item I give & bequeath unto my daughter Mary Revill Ten Pounds

All which aforementioned legacies I desire may be paid by my executors within twelve months after my decease.

Item I give and bequeth to my grandson John Glossop, son of William Glossop & to my daughter in law Hannah Glossop, the possesion of my farm with all my household goods, Cattle, Challets & Personal Estate what so ever equally betwix them, after my debts, legacies & funeral expenses is discharged and do constitutes, make & ordain my grandson, John Glossop before mentioned & my daughter in law, Hannah Glossop joint executors of this my last will, provided she keep herself unmarried. But if she happens to remarry, then my grandson John Glossop shall pay her Five Pounds within one month after such marriage in full of her moiety or half part of this estate before bequeathed to her, and let her go.

Item I do hereby commit all care and the tuition of my grandson into the hands of my beloved friend Joseph Smith of Whilslodge whom I make trustee to this my last Will idesiring him to be aiding & assisting to my executors and to get this my Will performed & I do hereby revoke, disannul & make void all other with or Wills by us here to fore made, ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last Will & Testament in witness where I have hereunto set my hand & seal this day & year about written, signed, sealed, published & declared by the said John Glossop in the presence of us.
