I have more information on the Jones family who came to Portland, Australia from Netson, Ashton, Tarvin areas in Cheshire, England. However most of the info is from when they were in Australia. Inc Photo's. The Jones family are directly connected to the Thomas and Edwards families in Portland and were responsible for building many of the bluestone buildings around the area.

The Jones family seems to have their fair share of troubles and tragedy. Emily's parents were seen fighting on Christmas morning by their son Frank. He decided to get his younger brother George and head off to his uncle and aunties for the day. When he arrived home that evening the house was burnt down with both parents inside. The boys were only young at the time and it was something Frank never got over. Other family members drowned in the surf at the local beach and another committed suicide. This information comes from one of Frank's grandchildren.

The Jones family were stonemasons around the Portland area and along with the Thomas' who were also related they built the bluestone cottage at the Portland botanical gardens, the old ANZ bank and many other buildings around the town. I am not sure if they worked for someone or for themselves.

Emily Jones was quite hard of hearing according to the divorce partition that I got from the Vic divorce records. This tells of Emily's life with Edward and what she went through with him. She had an affair with James Collumb but never admitted that in the papers but Edward used that as a bit of his defence. He fought her all the way and in the end I think she gave up. It cost Edward about 500 pounds and that was in 1896. There was a previous attempt to divorce Edward in NSW earlier but it also was unsuccessful. Although I dont have these detail yet the lodgement was noted in the NSW Divorce records.

This family has many interesting stories and I would love to hear from anyone else who is related to this family. Email me at - kim_may13@yahoo.com.au
