If you have an intrest in the outdoors and a bit of New Zealands colourful gold mining history then Naseby could be the place for you to homestay at. We can offer a really comfortable no worries package deal for the overseas visitor and can also cater to the local market as well. The local Mount Ida gold field was found in the 1860's by the Parker brothers and within a year 5000 miners were living under canvas and deriving a living from what was known as a 'poor mans diggings'.It was because of my interest in gold panning and what Naseby had to offer us as a family - that prompted us fifteen years back to build ourselves a holiday home and then 3 years back to buy ourselves a modern residence with gold mining homestaying in mind. Here in Naseby we are surrounded by a lot of New zealands mining history. Quite a few of the local rivers have gold in them, as is evident from when you start by taking 2 or 3 pans of gravels from them. The old miners were pretty thorough and did not leave too much for those coming behind so this prompted me in to making my first dredge, as I found that to work with a shovel into a pan or hand sluice was quite hard work - and slow. I made the decision to build my first dredge and finding this a good way to do my mining stepped up to the Keene 5" Triple to be able to work under water and this year again revamped up to the Keene twin 9hp 6" dredge. Tours to some of the more spectacular parts of the mount Ida diggings can be had. A visit to the 'Mount Burster' field as it was known in the early days, will surely fill one with awe at the enormity of this venture as a gold field that is 5000 feet above sea level. The 'Buster' as it is commonly known now is reached by 4WD vehicle and the panoramas that can be seen when 5000ft up of the surrounding Maniototo Plain are nothing short of breath taking. Further tours to other areas of the Central Otago goldfields are within short but enjoyable driving distances from Naseby. |
