NASEBY

Several years ago we built a little house on the prarie... plains... hills... mountains... maybe we'll go for the mountains and sometimes (as much as we can) we go there for our rest nad recreation... Naseby... paradise in the central region of Southern New Zealand.

Naseby is a small township of about 70 - 80 permanent residents that swells over the xmas holiday period to any where between 1,000 and 2,000 people...

Its main industry is forestry - the forest was first planted back in the late 1800's and because Naseby is 2,000 feet above sea level growth of the trees therein is fairly slow...

Winters can be quite harsh - frosts (-10) and snow laying on the ground for quite a few weeks at a time. The frosts play a big part in winters recreation for the residents and visitors - with the echoes on still winters nights of 'Curlers' 'throwing' their stones down the frozen surface of the local curling rink

Recently an outdoor skating rink has been built that is about 50/50 natural freezing and man made ice. It attracts quite a few visitors through the winter and team skating contests along with outside of town curling contests can be seen...

Summer time is the opposite ... On a hot summers day it is not uncommon to have the temp; soaring to 30 - 40 deg; cels;. We have a swimming dam to go to when a bit of cooling off is needed. This is very popular with the families that are resident in the nearby camping ground...

There are lots of forestry tracks on which to spend leisure time walking and enjoying a bit of 'nature'. Mountain bikes are becoming very popular here and they also use some of the tracks for their sport. Trail bike riding can be done in the fire breaks throughout the forest and is becoming more popular for family recreation... Nowdays tends to see me giving up the two wheels for four - must have some thing to do with the body not being as agile as it once was...
