Ferrets are strict carnivores, this means they are meat eaters .They have an extremely high metabolic rate, most ferrets eat 7 to 10 small meals every day to sustain the energy required by their high metabolic rate.Ferrets should have food available at all times.
The food needs to have 34-38% protein and 18-25% fat. Animal protein should be the first ingredient(usually poultry, poultry meal or poultry by-products) and at least three of the first 5 ingredients, and it must have a low ash level (7.0% or less).
Itīs important to feed your pet a high quality food, this way, you will prove nutrients needed in the proper amounts to help keep your pet healthier(in a long term) and saving on medical costs.These foods are more expensive, but the ferrets will eat less and their stools will be reduced (because of amount of fiber)
Itīs a good idea to give your ferret a mix of several brands (3 at least) because ferrets prefer the variety. Ferrets imprint of food at the age of 6 months, this means that if you always give them the same food and suddenly change, your ferret wont recognize the new food as food and theyīll refuse it.The slightest change in diet could make them not recognize it as food. If the maker of the regular food changes an ingredient or if you go buy the food and itīs not availableyouīll find yourself in a problem.
