None more than the question: If I holiday Fuerteventura, am I visiting the lost city of Atlantis?
Legend has it that Atlantis – an advanced, civilised country far ahead of its neighbours – sank beneath the waves in a terrible seismic event taking all its inhabitants with it. Or did it?
Thoughts of an entire country being swamped by waves seemed impossible until the recent tsunami. But could Fuerteventura really be part of Atlantis?
Well, the Guanches – the native people of the Canaries – are known from geological evidence to have been fair skinned, tall, blonde haired and blue eyed. Some believe them to be related to the Berbers of North Africa, others that it is possible to link them to Europeans from France, England and Spain.
So where is the Atlantis connection? Some Atlantologists believe that Fuerteventura and the the Canary Islands are the highest peaks of the mountain of the lost city.
The people of Atlantis are believed to have had the same physical attributes as the Guanches.
Geologists argue otherwise. They say that, basically, the Canaries are made up of the wrong sort of rock to be Atlantis. They are simply part of the Mid Atlantic Ridge which rises 3,000 metres from the sea floor.
So is that the end of the Atlantis connection? No. Historians have been puzzled why the Guanches had no appetite for the sea despite being surrounded by water and even able to glimpse Lanzarote from their own shores. They never sailed, had no idea how to design boats and never attempted to become a sea-faring nation.
Other Atlantologists studying ancient texts like Plato and Homer argue that Atlantis existed and was near Indonesia.
When it sank beneath the waves, the great sailing nations of the time helped re-settle survivors scattering them all over the world, many here in Fuerteventura.
Which would explain why the Guanches had no appetite for the sea. Having survived the sea’s rage they arrived as passengers after an arduous journey knowing nothing about sailing and with little desire to risk the wrath of the waters again…
