Not just a zoo, the park also includes a botanical garden, a huge garden centre, a camel safari base and a very attractive restaurant.
It first opened in 1985 as a park exhibiting the local flora of the island. Now it houses plants and animals from around the world.
The first animals were chimpanzees. They were followed by crocodliles, exotic birds and now the residents include giraffes, zebras, antelopes – and even more exotic birds.
Entrance to the zoo is 17 Euros for adults (reduced for children). Walking through the bird cages is like walking through a jungle and you can find many species of colourful and bizarre-looking exotic birds as well as birds of prey. Shows by crocodiles, sea lions and parrots keep the adults as well as the children amused.
The garden centre is a mass of colourful flowers and stretches over a hufe area. Here you can buy almost anything from a pot of herbs to an indoor plant o a fully grown palm tree.
The camel reserve is one of the most important in Europe with more than 300 examples of the animal which is the traditional method of transport on the island and which farmers used widely for toiling the hard earth.
