Down Gallatin Road
Roger's car tour, with R. Stevie, Krys & Billy A
late Sunday afternoon, 16 May 1999

vidcaps of some landmarks of my youth

Ancient Draper's Hardware store, near the corner of Old Hickory Blvd. & Gallatin Pike, where I used to go with Dad to get nails and such, when I was about 10 years old. Abandoned building still stands?

The B & B Cafe. Legendary home-style cooking eatery; Billy and Roger still patronize sometimes on Sunday mornings, before recording their latest Mighty Rams smash. Credited on Barefoot Jerry albums. Yumbo!

R. Stevie got his first pens, pencils and acrylic paints here. Still in business (Roger: "NOT"), one of the longest established Madison merchants.

Hy's Pawn Shop (next door to Doochin's). Might have bought a cheap guitar there. And what's that classic Spanish architecture to its left? I remember that building from 40 years ago! (Roger: "Howell Realty and Auction")

Pugh's Pharmacy. Pugg's drugs.

Gallatin Road north

Empty lot, where my elementary Stratton School was recently torn down. Sad.

The historic Presbyterian Church, also recently demolished. (Roger: "Now a Jack-In-The-Box!")

Madison Square Shopping Center, the true crux of all that was the Madison teen-age experience in the 1960's.

Shoney's Big Boy. New remodel, same location. EVERY Madison kid cruised (circled endlessly!) the OLD Shoney's (with its drive-in overhang, order from a speaker, park and eat). Happy Days!

Ice cream! Still there!? Next to Madison Barber Shop.

Backlot of MSSC, came to importance later (1970-72), when I worked at a record store there called "Sgt. Pepper's" and even played an afternoon rockshow on the pavement with Mark Clifton, Jody Maphis and Peter Spero! Madison Theatre on the left. Saw "Love Story" there, with Susan Saltonstall.

10¢ Krystal hamburgers for us late-night stoned hippies.

Behind the Square, where I had my first (or second?) job, at the Lazy Susan Restaraunt (circa 1968). How'm I doin'? Western Auto. Harvey's. McClures (where my mom worked for years, early '70s)! Anybody remember the early pay-trampoline, near the back by the railroad tracks? And Go-Karts!!

Col. Tom Parker's original Madison headquarters house, as Elvis was exploding worldwide. Little did we know.

Entrance to historic Spring Hill cemetery. Bury me there!

Off the G-Pike, onto Briley Parkway, crossing the Cumberland and going back down to Billy's river house......whew!
