Belgaum district 502 km (312 miles) Northwest of Bangalore. This bustling city, on the border with Maharashtra, was an important garrison town under the British. Even today, the cantonment, with its bungalows and barracks, has a significant military presence. Earlier, in the 16th and 17th centuries, Belgaum was a provincial centre under the Adil Shahi rulers of Bijapur the Marathas of Pune as well as the Mughals when they occupied this part of Karnataka. The Fort to the east is unusually elliptical in layout and its stone walls incorporate many resused temple blocks. The Safa Mousque nearby was built in the first half of the 16th century by Asad Khan, the governor of Belgaum. The town also has three temples that date to the late Chalukyan period.
