Gadag
district 450 km (280 miles) Northwest of Bangalore. An important cotton
collection centre,the sleepy little town of Gadag comes to life during
the cotton season in May and June. During these months, the cotton
market hums with activity and is well worth a vist. A number of late
Chalukyan monuments (11th-12th centuries) in the city indicate its
historic past. Standing to the south is the Trikuteshvara Temple,
remarkable for its three sanctuaries facing a common, partly open
hall. Inclined slabs that serve as balcony seats are decorated with
figurative panels, and are overhung by steeply
angled eaves. Inside the hall, the columns have figures arranged in shallow niches. The east sanctuary accomodates three lingas, while the one to the south is dedicated to the goddess Saraswati.
In the middle of the city stands the Someshvara Temple. Though abandoned and now in a dilapidated state, its intricate carvings are fairly well preserved. The doorways to the hall have densely carved figures and foliation.
