 The Murray Tartan.                                                          Blair Castle
                                                                     .
The sound of the resident piper may be heard daily, echoing around the
pristine white-harled walls of a stronghold which has been the ancestral
home of the Earls and Dukes of Atholl since 1269.

Today, Blair Castle is Scotland's most visited privately-owned historic
house. Not so much as a house or fortress, but bearing more
                               resemblance to
a palace.

Thirty two fully furnished rooms are open to view , each containing
different aspects of the excellent and varied collections so meticulously
chosen and fervently tended by the Murray family over the years.

When Queen Victoria visited Blair Castle in 1884, she was so impressed
                               by
the 200 'Athollmen' who formed her royal bodyguard, that she saw fit
                               to
present them with regimental colours. Today, they  are the only
                               private
army in Europe. The Atholl Highlanders are recruited mainly
                               from the
Atholl estates, and exist today as a private ceremonial
                               bodyguard.
