The Caledonian Canal links the Atlantic Ocean to the
North Sea,running
in a S/W to N/Easterly direction across
the second narrowest
point in Scotland. It was constructed
in order that fishing
fleets would not have to traverse the
sometimes hazardous
Northern coast, but have easy access
to both coastlines
as they followed the fish shoals.
It is approximately
70 miles long and utilises the
natural lochs (One
of which is Loch Ness ) to be found in
the Great Glen, which
was formed by long-extinct volcanic
activity.
As the rain-laden clouds
sweep in from the Atlantic on
the prevailing
Westerly wind, the rainfall in Fort William,
at the Western entrance,
is 100" (254 cms.)per annum,
dropping to 30" (76
cms.) pa. at the Eastern Inverness access,
the rain being precipitated
as the winds travels inland. Thus
for every mile travelled
East from Fort William, the rainfall
decreases by
1" (2.54 cms.)
