Loch
Ness stretches from Fort Augustus at it's Western end , to Inverness, near
the East coast, a distance,
of some 24 miles. It is possible to make the round trip as
it is bounded by road,
although the road on the Southern side is minor, with
passing places on certain
stretches.
The ruin of Glen
Urquhart Castle, in the foreground, is open to visitors, where
all
relevant
historical information is available. The castle was deliberately blown
up in
1691
to prevent it becoming a base for the Jacobites.
There are several daily
cruises on the loch, from Inverness, and it is possible to hire
cabin cruisers on a
weekly basis, if the idea of cruising the Caledonian Canal,
navigating
it's numerous locks, has it's appeal for you.
The myth (Or otherwise!)
of 'Nessie' is investigated in detail at the
Information Centre at Drunnadrochit,
where various videos taken during the
multiple searches
are shown, and attempted explanations as to the origin and
existence of
such a creature, also on video, are offered.
