Beanie Baby Dress
Meg Littlefield
This is a dress that was intended for Valentino, but has been worn by just about every beanie in my dear daughter's collection. I used some sport (or maybe DK) weight chenille that I picked up at a yard sale. I don't know the manufacturer as the labels had been removed before I bought it. It takes less than one 50g ball, and it's knit all in one piece with a little crochet.
Gauge
20 sts and 26 rows to 4" (I used US size 5 needles) in stockinette st.
Body
Cast on 24 sts (Tip: You are going to be picking up these sts later on, so I suggest using either a single cast-on or a chain cast-on with a different color that you can take out later).
Neck
Work 10 rows (2") st st.. Place marker on each edge to mark arnholes.
Work 10 more rows (2" st st.
Opening: K5, bind off 14, k to end of row.
Next row: k5. cast on 14, k remaining st.
Work the rest of the body by working 10 rows (2") st st, place markers, and work 10 more rows (2") st st.
Leave sts on needle for ruffle.
Ruffle
Increase for every st -- you should now have 48 sts.
Work 11/2" of K2, P2 ribbing.
Bind off all sts.
Pick up 24 sts from the cast on row and repeat the ruffle.
Fold piece in half and sew the sides from markers to bottom edge.
Finishing
With a size E (or close approximate) crochet hook, work a row of single crochet/chain 3 picot around the armholes and neck opening.
Beanie Baby Sun Dress
Betsy Baird
This pattern is especially suitable for left over Red Heart variegated baby yarn. It takes me about an hour and a half to whip one of these out and it only has two ends to darn in. I recommend it for holiday charity bazaars. I also gratefully acknowledge the other designers whose ideas I have adapted here, especially Martha Haynes, Mary K. Dominski and Anne Bosch.
Materials:
#3 double point needles, set of five
1oz. sport weight yarn
1 yarn needle to finish
Gauge:
5 stitches/inch (gauge is not critical, toys are not fussy about fit)
Directions:
Cast on 22 sts (Suggestion: cable cast on)
Join and knit one round of k1p1 rib.
Yoke:
Divide stitches on four needles: 3, 8, 3, 8
Skirt:
Row 1: Increase 1 stitch at each end of each needle (suggestion: yarn overs one stitch in from each end).
Row 2: Knit even.
Repeat these two rows for a total of six times (70 stitches: 15, 20, 15, 20).
On last even round, k1p1 rib only on the two sets of 15 sleeve stitches.
Waist:
On next round, bind off the two sets of 15 sleeve stitches in knit.
Join body stitches and knit one round even (40 stitches: 10,10,10,10). Suggestion: Switch the order of each pair of underarm stitches to tighten gap.
K1p1 rib for three rounds.
Increase 1 in every stitch of next round (80 stitches: 20, 20, 20, 20). Suggestion: Knit in front and back of each stitch.
Knit 12 rounds even.
Seed st for next 4 rounds
Bind off in pattern.
Darn in two ends
Beanie Baby Sweater
Marion Engel
Materials: Size 6 needles Worsted weight or dk yarn
Instructions: Cast on approximately 20 stitches. Garter stitch for 4 rows.
Stockinette stitch about 10 rows. Cast on 5 stitches at each end of needle for sleeves. Garter stitch about 6 ridges. In the middle of the next row, cast off about 8 stitches for neck. Next row, cast on the same number.
Do the front same as the back.
Sew up the side seams and you have a sweater any Beanie would be proud to wear. They are not fussy. I have made intarsia hearts on a Valentino sweater, a purple rose on Princess's, a green shamrock on Erin's. Just let your imagination go.
