Chic
New York writers Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edward's pet disco group. Nile and Bernard previously recorded with The Big Apple Band and appeared in songs such as "I'm doin' fine now" (New York City) and "A Fifth of Beethoven" (Walter Murphy).
"Dance, dance, dance (Yowsah, yowsah, yowsah)", Chic's first single, is the archetypal disco song with a thumping bassline that can't be beaten. "Everybody dance" was the follow-up hit, listen to the amazing LP or 12" break bassline. Much covered in the 1970's and 1990's; even by The Players Association. This album also contains "Strike up the band" and "You can get by".
Written about the famous New York Disco Studio 54, "Le Freak" was the best selling single in Warner Brother's history (six million copies in the US) and spent six weeks at #1 in the US pop charts. It returned, remixed, in the 1980's as "Jack le Freak". Further hot disco releases include "I want your love", "Good times", "My forbidden lover", and "My feet keep dancing". Notable bassline is "Good times"; sampled by The Sugarhill Gang on the first commercially succesful rap track.
Rodgers and Edwards also produced several other disco groups in the 1970's, including Sister Sledge, Norma Jean (who was also vocalist with Chic), Sheila B. Devotion ("Spacer"), Grace Jones, and Diana Ross's 1980 album ("I'm coming out", "Upside down").
"Dance, dance, dance (yowsah, yowsah, yowsah)" was initially released as a promo on the Buddah label before Chic signed to Atlantic records. It was mixed by New York DJ Savarese (from Disconet) and also formed part of the first ever Disconet 12".
Also, "Dance, dance, dance (yowsah, yowsah, yowsah)" was the first commercially available single on the Atlantic label (Atlantic came into the game quite late compared to Salsoul). All the US Chic 12" are shown below up to 1980 - hope you don't find it too confusing because some tracks were pressed in various formats many times. The DK 12" are commerical and the DSKO 12" are promotional. I have tried to show them in chronological order of release.
