MFSB

Mother, Father, Sister, Brother... the most universal band to come out of the Philly machine.

Began in 1973 as a conglomeration of musicians signed to the Philadelphia label. Earliest disco hit was single "Love is the message", which featured background vocals by the Three Degrees, who were at that time also signed to Philadelphia.

MFSB's biggest year was 1974 which yielded international early-disco hit "T.S.O.P. (The sound of Philadephia)", which became the eponymous theme for Philadelphia records. This record was used as the theme for the US "Soul Train" TV programme for years.

"K-Jee" was the other remembered song, since it appears on "Saturday Night Fever" - but like many other of their tracks, it's a cover version (of a Nite-liters song). Around the mid-1970's listen for things like "Sexy" and "Let's go disco", along with their cover version of O'Jay's early Philly hit "Backstabbers".

Close collaboration with Dexter Wansel from 1978 onwards led to a shift in musical style, with more funky, less Philly disco tracks like "Dance with me tonight", "Is it something I said" and "Mysteries of the world".

"Love is the message" and "T.S.O.P." were finally pressed onto 12" in 1979 in the US, being much too early first time around to utilise the invention of the 12" in 1975. There is also a UK-only 12" of "Mysteries of the world".
