Rahni P. Harris & F.L.O.
"Six million steps (West runs south)" was a big UK dancefloor record
in 1978. It was released in the USA on the Inspirational Sounds label, and in
the UK on Mercury. However it was the instrumental version which appealed to the
jazz-funk fans, and for this reason the vocal version was relegated to the
b-side of the UK 12". The track ended up in the top 50 of the UK charts.
The song is actually about the athlete Andy West, who in 1978 ran from the
north to the south of the US without stopping, (or some such feat). Presumably
he was too busy running to dance to this record.
Rahni later wrote p-funk classic "Work that sucker to death" for
Xavier in 1981.
