How much money can you expect to make ?

Soundman picture

How much money you make will depend on many factors. Every film and television project has a budget. And every budget usually has an allowance for a Production Assistant - some have an allowance for several PA's. The size of the project doesn't necessarily dictate how much the PA will get paid. For example, if the PA works very closely with the Producer, it may mean a larger salary even though the budget is low and there isn't a large crew. The more responsibility you have, usually, the more pay you can expect to receive.

Most PA's are paid on a daily rate. Some are paid on a weekly rate, and others are paid one lump sum for their duration on a project. The average salary for a PA is about £100 a day, in the UK and $100 a day in the US. But remember, this is only an average. There will be productions where you will receive a very low salary, and some productions where the salary is very high. Salaries can range all over the board. Some PA's are paid very well by their Producers. This depends on how many projects they have worked on with that particular Producer. Like all Positions, there's usually an increase in salary over time. If you find a Producer you like to work with, you should try and stay with that Producer from project to project. Then you'll be able to ask for a salary increase after successfully completing one or two productions.

Some PA's charge by the hour (More so in the US).You should ask for no less than $10 or £10 per hour. You should also receive a petrol allowance if you're using your own vehicle. As a Production Assistant, you'll usually be an independent contractor (freelancer) which means you'll get paid by cash/cheque and you'll have to pay taxes later - at the end of the FINANCIAL year (the end of March in the UK). You'll receive a wage statement from the Production Company. You'll need that statement to prepare your taxes. If you become an employee of the Production Company, then they'll take taxes out of each cheque. You may be wondering what things you need to have with you while working as a PA.
