2001 ASA 14u National Championships
Broken Arrow, Oklahoma

Opening Ceremonies

The Ceremonies were held at Tiger Stadium in Broken Arrow. One-half of the stadium was filled by the eighty-eight teams and fans. The event started with color guard bringing out the flags and then the National Anthem. Speeches were given by the Mayor of Broken Arrow, BAGSL members, and ASA officials. The umpires were introduced one by one and most of them were from Oklahoma. Can there be that many great calling "Blue" from one area? I hope so. The teams filed down off the stands and each one was introduced as they marched across the field. Some of the teams were dressed up in costume and some some girls were able to show off their tumbling abilities. The teams were lined up in the shape of an arrowhead and a group picture was taken. Gift trading, a national's tradition, commenced with Fusion trading gifts with Tuff-E-Nuff from Chino Valley, CA.

Fusion Vs Oklahoma Mustangs 2:00 PM Thu Aug 2, 2001 Fusion 5 (Win) Mustangs 2

The score is deceiving on this game. In the 7th inning it was tied 1-1. The game went into triple ITB, when timely batting and an error on the Mustangs opened up the score to 5-2 in the 10th. 8th inning - each team scores one to make it 2-2. Top of the 9th inning - Mustangs (home team) stop Fusion with a double play. Fusion had a runner at third when a hard hit ball to the short stop was fielded clean. The throw to first got the second out of the inning and the throw from first to home barely got the runner breaking from third. Bottom of the 9th inning - with one out and a runner at 3rd the Mustangs' batter hits a deep fly to centerfield. Fusion's centerfielder Jennifer Marsh plays the fly perfectly and with a rocket, easily gets the runner that tagged at third coming home. Brooke Hudson (catcher) makes the catch and blocks the plate for the double play, keeping Fusion in it for one more inning! 10th inning - with disciplined hitting and smart base running Fusion loads the bases with one out. Ashley Sharver at bat with two strikes nails a line drive up the middle for a single. Mustangs centerfielder throws home to prevent anymore runs and the ball takes a tricky hop and zips between the catcher's legs allowing one more run to score. Fusion scores another run on a hard hit ball to second by Heather Gresham. Fusion then holds the Mustangs for the win. Game duration - 2 Hrs 59 Min.
